The pros and cons of Bt Brinjal
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday February 9, 2010, New Delhi

The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee set up by the government approved BT Brinjal last year, a decision that caused an uproar among many civil society and farmer groups. After that, the Environment Minister has held many public consultations in different parts of the country.

Pros of Bt Brinjal

Those in favour of BT Brinjal say:

-         The use of Pesticides and costs will go down.
-         The yield of brinjal will increase.
-         Farmers will therefore earn more.
-         India's food security will benefit.

But protesters argue:

-         The impact on human health and environment is not clear.
-         Introducing BT Brinjal will open floodgates for other genetically-modified crops.

Firstly,i will introduce myself. I am currently doing my MS in Biotechnology at university in Hamburg,Germany. Last week,we had a discussion with one of the best professor in our university on this topic. As far as i believe,if the scientific committee has given the approval, then there should not be worries in consuming. I wonder from where people come to know about the false facts given above. I don`t know how many of you know this. World`s 69% production of soyabean is by GMO technique and all the people are healthy. The success factor of BT brinjal depends on the benefits to consumer. At present, consumers are not having any advantage of using BT brinjal. All is well

Only Issue at stakes here is the seed monopoly, concerning what happ when modified cotton seeds were introduced, prices shot up from 40 Rs to 1850 and then settling to 800 after govt intervention... Finally what this will lead to is MNCs ruling what india can produce and what India will not be allowed to produce
