Sibal vs IITs: It's all about the money
NDTV Correspondent, Saturday September 26, 2009, New Delhi

It's now a face off between the education minister and the IIT faculty on demands for pay hike. The latest round of battle has been sparked off by the minister's latest comments.

Here's what he said:

''If you think we are unjustified, I am willing to give them autonomy. But the issue is not about autonomy, it's about money,'' said Kapil Sibal, Union Human Resource Development Minister.

The statement has angered the teachers of IIT.

''I think it's very derogatory at the first instant, but we still want to give it a try and try to sort out any differences that we have with the ministry,'' said Saurabh Basu, IIT Guwahai.

''We had great regard for Sibal when he was Science & Technology Minister. But seems like something happens to these ministers when they get a second term. He is trivialising the issue by calling us money-minded,'' said R Gurunath, IIT Kanpur.

The 15,00 teachers of the Indian Institute of Technology, the country's premiere technical school with 15 branches, are demanding a pay hike and more autonomy.

The HRD minister has stuck to his stance: IITs are 100 per cent funded by the government, so no autonomy and the salary demands are beyond the government's means.

Kapil Sibal has welcomed dialogue but his latest statement is not going to make that easy.

Teaching is noble profession,i dont think it is a profession for money minded people.Research facilities!? you are saying IIT s doesnt have good research facilities? In an economic background like ours these institutions have by far the best research infrastructure(worth thousands of crores)in the country.. Anyone who have studied in IIT can confirm that a major % of faculty doesnot meet the standards of so called IIT;and these ppl demand world class pays? (their quality is one point and the economic resources is another).Infact not many of them concentrate on teaching(a debatable pt.). I must say that some of the faculty are excellent in their fields of research but not all of them. 'm sure there is mixed opinion between the qualified/dedicated faculty and others about this form of protest for the pay hike, hyping up its urgency. Now the govt. has decided to hike the fees of student in IITs(might be side effect of the pay hike), why aren't the faculty bothered? doesn't that make qualified/talented students from lower financial backgrounds prevent from entering in to IITs? "money is not everything. Peace of mind and freedom/flexibility of work matters in long run" -- this is what they preach to students and of course doesnt follow themselves!!

Why Sibal is shying away from giving IIT professors their dues?If we want to maintain our IIT brand which is valued all over it is important that not only IITs hv autonomy but also teachers at IIT are paid in line with other professionals. Mantris and Babus in various ministries want to control everything without understanding the need of the nation and ways to run large globally recognised institutions like IITs and IIMs. I am sure Mantri and Babus will now make a note for foreign travel to various countries to visit universities and understand how they r run. Actually this will b an excuse for a paid holiday away from the heat of Delhi. If an RTI application is made to find in the last 10 years from the time of Joshi and Arjun singh ( both very sick ministers in all senses) to find out how many visits hv been made by the Babus and Mantris on this pretext i am sure result will b alarming and may b much more than the demands of teachers. I wonder none of the ministers ever bothered to invest their MP fund allocation on these very institutions which they so eagerly want to control as if they own these.
