SOS from Himalayas to the world
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday September 22, 2009, Rohtang Pass

World leaders are meeting for the UN summit in New York, a precursor to the key climate change summit in Copenhagen in December. A strong message will be sent to them through the first-ever 'green carpet' premiere of a film on climate change. "The Age of Stupid" directed by Franny Armstong, will premiere at a solar-powered cinema tent in Manhattan. From there, the film will be streamed to 400 screens across America. The event also has live satellite linkups to melting glaciers and threatened rainforests.

One of these hotspots is a Himalayan glacier in Rohtang that has borne the brunt of climate change,  from where director Shekhar Kapur will be beaming out a live message to New York and India, urging politicians to wake up to the reality of climate change.

The impasse caused by climate change is historically caused by OECD countries whose brunt was most (for the last fifty years at least) borne by the most vulnerable in developing and Least Developed Countries (LDC). The US with one-sixth the population of India emits 6 times more in carbon emission even today. Despite a much higher base, the annual growth rate of carbon emission is almost 8% for the US while 2% only for India. As long as OECD countries maintain their present rates of carbon emissions, India whatever the steps it takes, will not be able to save the Himalayas as you campaign. If serious about saving the Himalayas, confine your campaign on OECD countries to drastically cut back their carbon emissions by at least 50%. Appreciate Pareto law - 20% responsible for 80%.

Himalayas are really the Jewel of India.Even the Creator Bramha could not describe their greatness, power grandeur said the eminent Ancient Telugu Poet Allsani Peddahana/ abundant mineral wealth, wonderful wild life, numberless sandalwood and camphor trees,Glaciers, rain forests what not. This is the position till 150 years back or so. But now every thing is on a diminishing return. Only conferences and speeches on the Environment Day every year. Our Politicians worry only about next elections not about neat generations.
