Ready to launch fresh offensive against Maoists: Buddha
NDTV Correspondent, Sunday November 8, 2009, Midnapore, West Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattarcharya said on Sunday his government is ready to launch a fresh operation against the Maoists.

The chief minister who is on a two-day visit to Naxal-affected areas said there is no question of talks with the Maoists or Peoples' Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA) and that they must abjure violence and surrender arms.

Speaking in West Bengal's Midnapore, Buddhadeb said the Operation Greenhunt is not meant for West Bengal.

"We are ready to launch a fresh operation. The state and central government should work together," said Buddhadeb.

The chief minister echoed the prime minister on the threat to internal security from Maoists, he said, "I also admit what the PM has said, that the Maoists are the greatest threat."

Maoists getting arms from China?

Meanwhile Home Secretary GK Pillai has told NDTV that the Naxals are probably getting their arms from Chinese mafia.

He said, "The Chinese connection to the Maoists is only perhaps the arms."

He also stressed that Maoist are not willing to abjure violence under any circumstance. According to them it's a fundamental right.

It is quite obvious to any right-thinking person in India that the Maoist-Naxal influence cannot be curbed or contained without seriously addressing the issue of tribal emancipation politically and through a non-confrontationist, peaceful, rational approach. It is no use using force to crush Naxalism as its roots are to be found in the mindless, cruel exploitation and suppression of the tribal population by the landgrabbers and powerful groups trying to exploit our precious forest resources. It is learnt that about 250 districts out of over 600 districts have Maoist presence and they are quite popular among the tribal people. The terrain in which they are operating is quite difficult for successful army operations. Further, such violence will only breed more violence. The Maoist-Naxal influence seems to be spreading and with well-equipped mafias, Indian and foreign, in uncontrollable clandestine operation with support from tycoons, we seem to be heading for a serious internal emergency if violent methods continue to be used for solving the problem. One can only hope that better sense will guide our national and state political leaders of all hues.
