Pune: Death, his 'surprise gift' to her
NDTV Correspondent, Sunday December 20, 2009, Pune
For a girl, who had vowed to live for the rest of her life with a man, this came as a shock. Nineteen-tear-old Pune resident Dhanshri received imminent death as a 'surprise gift' by her husband for their marriage anniversary.

Her 20-year-old stock broker husband, Kishore Kumbhar, took Dhanshri to a late night movie as part of her marriage anniversary celebrations. Then, before returning home at around 1.30 in the night, he took her for a stroll along a riverside. Kishore told his wife to close her eyes so that he could present a surprise gift. The moment she obliged, Kishore pushed her into the river and thinking that she has drowned, escaped from the place. But Dhanashri held on to life.

"It was not deep. I held on to something the whole night and shouted for help, but it was only in the morning that some people saw me and rescued me," recalls Dhanashri.

Dhanashri went and filed a complaint with the police who have arrested Kishore.

"We have file a case of attempt to murder against Kishore," says Digamber Jadhav, PSI, Sangvi police station.

Kishore and Dhanshri who lived in opposite houses in Pimpri area in Pune, had married last year on December 20, after a three-year affair. But a few months after marriage, Kishore started doubting her character.

The Pune resident couldn't believe she is still alive.

While I appreciate Gauri's comments on teaching Men some respect, I object it being confined only to Men. What if some Woman commits infidelity? What if some Woman governer misuses her power on common man? Well, offcourse I am not being biased when I say tha common Man and Woman should be taught to respect oneself and each other.

It is time education of Indian men went a drastic operation. I don't think they are taught to respect women. They see their mothers playing a pathetically docile role at home, or an aggessive role which is criticised by relations, and they are given such hopeless images of what an ideal woman should be, that they have a blinkered vision of what a woman is, and how to treat her. First teach boys in this country how to RESPECT. Right from animals, to neighbours, to tress, to roads, to girls and society...they need to learn the meaning and implementation of the word called RESPECT..
