Power cut at hospital, patient on life support dies
NDTV Correspondent, Saturday October 10, 2009, New Delhi
A senior citizen under intensive care at Delhi's Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital passed away on Saturday, after her life support system collapsed due to a power failure.

Mrs Gaur would have celebrated her 75th birthday on Sunday. But the power cut lasted for over 45 minutes, and the doctors couldn't revive despite their best efforts.

The family has decided to sue the hospital with criminal negligence.

According to Raj Mangal, the deceased's son-in-law, the doctors, in a bid to save her, resorted to using light from their cellphones to manually revive her.

He also said that back up generators didn't kick in when the power collapsed, plunging the entire ICU and CCU wings into darkness and shutting off important life support machines.

The family isn't blaming the doctors, but says while the doctors were doing their best the hospital is responsible for the death by neglecting to maintain its back up systems.

Every Major Hospital has " Stand by Generators" and they are regularly tested for their proper function. In my Hospital after informing the ICU, CCU, Surgical ICU and the Medical ICU staff, the electricity is voluntarily shut-off to see whether the Stand by Emergency Generators automatically takes over or not within 5 seconds of disruption. In case, if for any reason they fail, we are at hand to take over manually. In this case not only the Hospital, the Electrical staff are responsible but even the Doctors and Para-medical staff are also because they are trained in ambu-bagging and switching over to cylinder gas and they are always present near the patient to monitor the life support system.

This is most concerning! The hospital has to be sued for this. It is their responsibility to ensure the ICU remains an ICU at all times!
