Inside relief camps for Sri Lanka's Tamils
NDTV Correspondent, Thursday October 15, 2009, Chennai

The report submitted by the Indian delegation of MPs that visited the Lankan Tamils in relief camps in Sri Lanka is disturbing.

The delegation in its report says, "Inmates complain of scarcity of food, milk and drinking water in the relief camps. There's shortage of water even for toilet purposes and most inmates don't have even extra clothing."

M K Kanimozhi, a DMK Member of Parliament adds, "The biggest worry now is in a short while the monsoon will start and there'll be rains. There's a big threat that an epidemic will start, flooding and so many other issues.

So far, these camps have been out of bounds for the international media and even the red cross.

The MPs have managed to get an assurance from the Lankan President that 58,000 Tamils will be sent to their homes in 15 days. But there's no time frame for resettling the remaining two lakh people.

Lanka blames landmines planted by the Tamil Tigers for the delay. Chief Minister Karunanidhi has sought India's help to clear them.

Jayalalithaa has questioned the credibility of this delegations' report. While no one knows for sure the real plight of Lankan Tamils, the politics over their cause continues in Tamil Nadu even after the ethnic war.

The reports is out about the appalling conditions under which these IDPs are forced to exist, what will the Indian government do now? Will it protect Sri Lanka from probing its war crimes and human rights violations or take a firm stand to see justice done to rhem?
