Mahasweta Devi mediates in Trinamool row
Monideepa Banerjie , Thursday November 19, 2009, Kolkata

Writer Mahasweta Devi has been roped in by the Trinamool Congress to quell a revolt by singer turned MP Kabir Suman.

First he attacked his own party workers for corruption. Then he threatened to quit as Trinamool MP when Mamata Banerjee called him a guest of the party.

Trinamool MP Kabir Suman is still angry with his party - for corruption and because Mamata called him a guest of the Trinamool. But today the anger was tempered with declarations of loyalty and signals that he was rethinking his decision to quit as MP.

"If I am a guest, what am I doing here. I'd rather leave. I'm very serious. But that doesn't mean, I have taken the decision. That doesn't mean I am opposing Mamata Banerjee. I hold it CPM must leave and Mamata must become chief minister," said Kabir Suman, Trinamool MP.

However, Kabir Suman still intends to skip Parliament but for other reasons.

"In Lalgarh and in Chhattisgarh our honourable home minister is sending troops. They are waging a war on our people. I support the UPA government but I don't support this policy. I am protesting against it. What do I do as an MP? This is my question," said Suman.

Though Mamata played down Kabir Suman's revolt, she was worried enough to ask Mahasweta Devi to mediate. The move seems to have worked.

"Everything is ok, everything is ok," said Mahasweta Devi, Writer.

Some may call it a storm in a tea cup but Kabir Suman's outburst has embarrassed the Trinamool. It will need some time to live down this siege within.

It is alarming, saddening and unfortunate to see the highly regarded and legendary writer, Mahasweta Devi so involved and supportive of the Trinamool and Mamta's policies.. It speaks volumes about the doomed days to come...
