Left rules out early polls in Bengal
NDTV Correspondent, Sunday November 15, 2009, Kolkata

There's no question of elections before 2011 in West Bengal, that's what the left made clear on Sunday.

This comes after partners in the ruling Left Front demanded snap polls after their rout in the assembly bypolls last week.

The demand for early elections was a murmur after the Left's Lok Sabha debacle. That murmur has now become a rumble and may soon escalate into a roar.

Senior CPM politburo member Biman Bose ruled it out on Sunday.

"The polls are scheduled for 2011 so they will be held then. We have the mandate 2011. There is no plan to advance the elections. Neither our party nor the Left front wants it," said Bose.

The vote in Bengal is not for Mamata, but against the CPM which has destroyed the state in last 32 years. Being an outsider, we use to think what is 'scientific rigging', but if you are in Bengal during election you will know. Trinamool does it in their their turf while CPM in theirs. Administration turns blind eyes to blatent violation. Top cops and bureaucrats have to take orders from CPM cadre, and party is an extra-constitution authority. Now people of Bengal have said enough is enough, and are willing to put maverick Mamata to CM chair. Such is the desperation. In Midnapore, people feel relief with decimation of Laxman Seth who was the don of Haldia. But people of Bengal should see to it that it doesn't give absolute majority to anyone, as absolute power corrupts even a honest politicians.

I wish to put in my views as succinctly as possible: If the Left-Front believes that it has the MORAL right to rule West Bengal(since they keep harping on the mandate of 2006 & claim vehemently that the 'people' are still with them), then it has nothing to fear if early elections are held. Their win will silence all their detractors and the skeptics (such as I)and more importantly, it will help them move ahead boldly with governance - which is suffering its worst crisis in the present scenario. On the other hand, if the Left feels that the 'people' are NOT with them anymore, then should immediately call for fresh elections and let the 'people' decide who should rule the state. At least, that is what one would expect from the Left-Front/ CPI(M), and the CM Budhdhadeb Bhattacharyya, since they have always made exorbitant claims about being Morally and Ethically superior to other political parties!
