Press Trust of India, Monday April 19, 2010, New Delhi

Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi paid an advance tax of Rs 11 crore during 2009-10, many times more than the amount he shelled out a year ago.

The advance tax paid by Modi during 2008-09 was in lakhs, said a Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) official but specific details were not available immediately.

Individuals and entities, as per the Income Tax Act, are required to pay advance tax during the course of the fiscal on specified dates. The quantum of tax depends on the income being earned during the course of the year.
