Kerala boat flips over, 8 schoolchildren killed
NDTV Correspondent, Wednesday November 4, 2009, Malappuram

Eight schoolchildren have died in Kerala's Malappuram district, after a country boat taking 31 of them back from school flipped over on Wednesday.

All the students belonged to the Moorkanad Higher Secondary School.

The local fire brigade has started search and rescue operations for the others; three have already been rescued and shifted to hospital.

On September 30, close to 40 tourists died when their boat flipped over on the Thekaddy Lake near the Periyar National Park.

Basic safety rules were violated in that case. Tourists were not wearing life jackets. After the accident, it was discovered that the boat had technical faults.

Government should not allow such type of safety-less transportation. All Indians are living their lives on high risk. But they give VOTES to leader without any risk. If Leaders are NOT willing to work in system and can not assure safety to ppl, then they are NOT Supposed to be on the sit where they are. Government has power to control such issues before it gets worst. But with heavy heart --they are not willing to take action. Why Govt. give license to boat authority if they dont follow safety ? Why Govt. dont think of other easy transportation? Why Govt. does not invest their money (taken from Indian PPl only) to facilitate us ? There are many why ? but Why should we ask such "WHY" ? when the Govt. is deaf and dumb. !!!!

another tragedy has taken place within a month in Kerala.last month it was in Thekkadi and today its in Malappuram. When will the government open its eyes to see the problems like not having basic infrastructures like bridge over river? Hundreds of students use the boat without a driver everyday in that place where that mishap took place.A case should be filed against panchayath authority to chief minister for not doing their duty properly. May their departed souls rest in peace
