J&K govt to transfer Shopian case to CBI
NDTV Correspondent, Wednesday August 12, 2009, Srinagar

The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to transfer the alleged Shopian rape and murder case to the CBI. The case will be handed over to the apex investigating agency subject to the approval of J&K High Court.

Earlier in the day there was an uproar in the state Assembly over the Shopian case. The Opposition PDP and CPM raised the issue of the DNA samples of the rape victims being fudged.

Some NC MLAs also demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI.

Earlier, reacting on the case, the High Court had said it does appear that the slides have been manipulated as the DNA evidence does not match those of the victims. It adjourned the case till August 18 with the judge saying the case will be pursued till justice is done.

"The judge said we will not allow any person to snatch the truth from us, we will not allow this case to be closed and will pursue it," the judge said.

In the previous hearing, the judge had said it is good that culprits have left their mark, but on Wednesday, he regretted that the only mark had been fudged.
