Jawans guarding Gateway forced to sleep on pavement
NDTV Correspondent, Friday November 20, 2009, Mumbai

The pictures showed a shocking but familiar story.

Jawans appointed to guard the Gateway of India sleeping at the monument they're meant to protect after Mumbai's 26/11 attacks. These men were not given rooms or toilets to use.  Instead, they pitched tents at the Gateway, turned into squatters near the Taj Hotel.

NDTV and other media reported on this story on Thursday, and instead of finding a solution, the government and local police reacted by forcing the jawans to give up their tents; they spent the night on the pavement. (Read: Guarding us without beds, homes)

On Thursday, Mumbai's Police Commissioner gave NDTV a predictable response: "We will look into the matter and take appropriate action," said D Sivanandan, Mumbai Police Commissioner.

The first lot died because they were ill equiped, now we would have some dying because of malnutrition and lack of basic amenities. We should show some respect to these jawans. The top brass shall LOOK INTO the matter! Disgusting!!!!

The Police jawan deserves better treatment and facilities. Give good facilities and expect proper service from the troops. When one CM can spend 1.7 crores on his official house and some cabinet can spend 36 lakhs on snacks, why we cant give basic facilities to jawan is beyond me.
