India votes against Iran's nuke programme at IAEA
NDTV Correspondent, Friday November 27, 2009, New Delhi

India has voted against Iran's nuclear programme at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The UN watchdog has reportedly censured Iran and asked it to halt uranium enrichment.

Reacting to the decision of the UN watchdog, Iran's envoy to IAEA has termed it as 'hasty and undue step'.

PTI adds:

At a meeting of the 35-member board of governors of the IAEA in Austrian capital Vienna, 25 countries voted in favour of the resolution spearheaded by the US.

Besides India, the resolution was endorsed by six world powers -- the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- reflecting a rare measure of unity on Iran. It is the first time since February 2006 that the IAEA board has passed a resolution against that country.

The resolution demanded that Iran immediately suspend construction of its newly-revealed uranium enrichment plant at Qom--a site kept secret until recently.

According to sources, India's decision to vote against Iran was taken at the highest level.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is in Port of Spain to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), consulted Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on the issue.

An inkling of India's position at the IAEA was given by Singh during his just concluded visit to the US where he made it clear that India does not support Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions.

It is for the third time in four years that India is voting against Iran at the IAEA.

This is blatant hypocrisy or perhaps yet another example of India attaching herself to Uncle Sam's apron strings. Are we, in India, not aware that our own nuclear programme, ostensibly started as "Atom for Peace" ultimately ended up with India clandestinely going nuclear and starting a nuclear arms race in the region? Has not India repeatedly refused to sign the NPT, something that Pakistan has been willing to do, subject to India signing it? Why these permanent members of the UNSC should decide what is good for the world, when they themselves have been responsible for almost all the woes of the third world countries? Iran -- or other countries in the region have every right to go nuclear as long as Isarel is a nuclear power. This alone can ensure a lasting peace in the region.
