Guarding us without beds, homes
Yogesh Pawar, Sunchika Pandey, Thursday November 19, 2009, Mumbai

Clothes hung out to dry, a jawan washing up after work, beds laid out for a much needed break: the Gateway's keepers have made the Gateway their home away from home.

After the 26/11 attacks, they were brought in to guard Mumbai's best known landmark but a year later the jawans posted at the Gateway of India are living a miserable existence, in fact they're little better than squatters.

"We have no choice to live like this," said a jawan posted at Gateway of India.

After 26/11, State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawans were posted here to guard the World Heritage site; 25 jawans every two months.

The Mumbai Police was to put a roof over their head, care for their daily necessities. The only caring they get is food from the police mess - three times a day.

Bathing, answering nature's call, all that at public urinal close by.

When asked Mumbai's Police Commissioner provided the all too familiar lip service.

"We will look into the matter and take appropriate action," said D Sivanandan, Mumbai Police Commissioner.

Hope this public shaming will get the Gateway's guardians their much needed shelter.

This is just the tip of an ice burg. The living conditions of Jawans are little known to us. They are so disciplined that made them to adjust to any conditions, may it be at the border or in a civilian place. They never complain of these miserable lives rather take pride of their sacrifice for the nation. On several occasion I have visited to my uncle who is a Jawan with the CRPF and in service for last 20 years or more. I wonder to witness the living condition of the Jawans in their Camp in South Delhi. They are living in make shift camp which is less protective to seasonal changes. They were habituated to live without fan or cooler during the scorching summer days and now the winter is quite tolerable for them as most of them have served many years in Kashmir Valley. The state of public toilet, drinking water and the food are beyond imagination. Still they smile when I ask my uncle why you don%u2019t complain. But it%u2019s an irony that in that same camp High rank officials enjoy every facility. So, How can we expect a better line of defense with such conditions?

Not just this incident, there are numerous incidents to site how much we respect the work of people in uniform. They live in MISERABLE CONDITION. A Condition which is way beyond imagination for these ill-equipped, over-worked people with meagre salaried men. IT is people of Mumbai to take this issue and give them the respect and dignity they deserve.
