Groundwater depleting fast in north India: NASA
Prachi Bhuchar, Monday September 21, 2009, New Delhi

Groundwater levels in most parts of the country are fast depleting because of the way we manage our resources. The drop in it is mainly attributed to excessive demand for irrigation as well as pumping water out of the ground faster than it is replenished.

A scientific study based on space agency NASA's satellite imagery, reveals that the country's entire northwestern belt is headed towards a severe water crisis. The satellite data shows images indicating that groundwater is depleting faster than it can be replenished.

"According to current estimates, about 839 blocks across the country are being over exploited. This is far more water being extracted than can be recharged. In 236 blocks the situation is critical," said BM Jha, chairman of Central Groundwater Board.

The findings become significant given the fact that many parts of the country are already reeling under drought. The big question at the moment is whether the situation is as grim as it is made out to be? And can water efficiency save the day?

One of the major reasons for the loss of groundwater is due to irrigation practices followed by farmers. However, experts say, farming aside, indiscriminate use of water in cities is also responsible for the current situation especially in cities like Delhi where the situation has turned grim over the years.

According to the latest figures, Delhi receives approximately, 906 billion litres of rain a year which amounts to 165 litres per person per day. On the other hand, the international norm is 135 litres per person per day.

So where is the problem?

"They say there are 45 per cent water losses but this is unbilled water," said Jyoti Sharma, president of water related NGO FORCE,

So yes, groundwater is depleting and yes it is more critical in some parts of the country. But there is a workable solution and experts say a combination of proper distribution, storage and use can go a long way in reducing the country's water worries.

The politicians running the Government or the opposition parties do not bother about the long term dangers.Agriculture is inevitable. But another major drain on ground water is construction of too many apartments in Cities.Wastage of water in urban and rural areas is also another factor.

I would like to give my best suggestion for saving water other than the reserviours.heavy raining times 75%of the water goes to sea, we manage to save the rest of the share.we can save it in the ground how?by drlling 30mts deep of 4 mm hole in to the underground will take rain water in to deep ground of the earth, this will pass to all the under ground dry places. As per the study the ground water level at metro cities is from 60 feet. in the village side some part 35 to 50 feet level.in underground earth is having empty pockets like big lakes, we can save in that pockets this will ensure our ground water level all time manageable.50 years ago we have lot of places not used for anything.so the rain water saved in those sites and long period of time it mange to penerate to ground level. Now we have used those area for agrculturs or housing developement so the rain doesnot stop on land for long period to penerate to underground. This is the problem why our ground water depleting.Growing population, washing mechines, running water system like taps, modern times of DWC,dressing styles all contributes more for depleting ground water. If you give me one chance to apper on your TV to talk of the subject sure will attract law makers of INDIA.We together put to end to the problem, not only in india all the world too.In my house I have a borewell with 60 feet deep. During the raining season from the trass rain water flow in to the borewell it takes any amount of water in to ground level. This pormpt me to think of the subject. I have tried to promote the idea to ruling people of india but all in the vein. by your help really it will reach to all walk of life . Thanking you in anticipation. best regards, Chennai.
