Goa rape victim wants to withdraw case
NDTV Correspondent, Wednesday December 9, 2009, Panaji

The Goa rape case victim has written to the Russian Consulate saying she fears for her life. The Russian has alleged assault by supporters of the rape accused.

She says she now wants to withdraw her case as the police are favoring the accused.

The victim said she immediately rushed to Panaji, 30 km away from the scene, to complain to the police about the attempt to assault her.

While the police claim that they can't get access to the rape accused, NDTV met him and asked for his side of the story. He told NDTV that all the allegations on him are false and politically motivated. He also claimed that he was not summoned by police for questioning.  (Watch: NDTV tracks down Goa rape accused)

However, The Goa Police have claimed that there is no truth in what John Fernandes has said, adding that he was not available for questioning. They also said that the crime branch opposed John's bail plea in High Court.

Meanwhile, high-profile south Goa politician John Fernandes was let off on bail on Tuesday. The anticipatory bail was granted by the south Goa district and sessions court to Fernandes after the defence lawyer argued that there was inconsistency in the victim's statements and that she had been changing her stand often.

Two days ago, the charge on the Goa politician was changed from attempt to rape to rape after the Goa Police Crime Branch stepped in.

As a British Asian Goa always reminded me of a good relaxed holiday, but in the past few years Goa has lost it charm to attract good uk tourist because in UK we keep hearing abt the growing crime and lawlessness, plus with this new case of rape, goa seems to be last on the list of destination to travel. This in many ways says a lot for Goa tourism, why would any Uk tourist fly 5000 miles to be fleeced, robbed and feel un safe, when the main aim of coming to Goa is purely to relax and unwind. In many ways the goan's deserve it because they have a not done anything abt the rising crime, drugs trade and the negative attitude towards domestic tourist. Once the foreign tourist stop coming and spending their pounds or euros. then hopefully they can wake up and take action once their lively hood is at stake, because the laid back goan has to wake up and take personal action for the state of goa. we can all blame the politicians and goons but that%u2019s a case in every state in India. Goans really need to be proactive, change their attitude and do more to keep tourist safe and start to care about Goa.

Another case of travesty of justice. The politicians are getting braver than ever to commit rape crimes. I wonder when will we see a quick justice system with police collaborating in effective time? Rather than making the case lodged with the police reduced to nothing. Shri
