Furious IIMs will review online CAT mess
Press Trust of India, Monday December 14, 2009, New Delhi
Livid over thousands of students failing to appear in the computer-based Common Admission Test (CAT), the government has convened a meeting of IIM directors on Wednesday even as the IIM faculty has demanded scrapping of the entrance test which was marred by technical glitches.

The faculty associations of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Kolkata have passed separate resolutions, seeking scrapping of the test. A few thousand students could not write the test due to virus attack and other technical problems.

Unhappy over the way the CAT was conducted, the Human Resource Development Ministry has convened a meeting of IIM directors on Wednesday to express its concerns.

Higher Education Secretary Vibha Puri Das will chair the meeting of IIM directors to discuss the issue in detail, a Human Resource Development Ministry official said.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal has already expressed displeasure over students facing problem during the computerised test which was marred by glitches from its beginning. The issue was raised in Parliament when BJP members criticised the government for the fiasco.

The test, which was supposed to be taken by 2.41 lakh students, was conducted by an American firm Prometric in a staggered manner over 11 days. However, all candidates failed to appear in the test due to the "virus attack".

It will not be fare to the candidates who went through glitches if we go along with this test. It should be scrapped.

Finally, i got to read that even IIMs are furious the way online CAT09 was conducted. Now all of us are looking forward to MR. Sibal's decision as it will make or break thousands of student's career. A lot of proofs have been given on the popular online forums and many online petitions have been submitted by the students wherein its clearly mentioned with proofs that not only technical glitches but many other genuine reasons are the cause of failure of CAT09.And evaluating students on the basis of this biased test will be completely unfair on the part of IIMs.
