Tamil Nadu: Fire accident at cracker godown; 32 killed
NDTV Correspondent, Friday October 16, 2009, Tiruvallar, Tamil Nadu
Thirty two people have been killed in a fire accident at a cracker godown in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district.

The accident occurred at Pallipattu, which is close to Andhra border.

According to the police sources, 40 people were believed to be present in the godown at the time of the accident. Twenty badly charred bodies have been pulled out of the godown, which was a wholesale point of firecrackers, police sources said.

The sources also said that 10 bodies were feared stuck inside the gutted godown and majority of the victims are believed to be from Andhra Pradesh.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.

Operations to retrieve the bodies were hampered due to the absence of electricity following power failure in the area after the incident.

This is a tragic incident on the eve of Diwali, which will be celebrated across the country on Saturday.

What the hell the Govt and it's saftey dept and labour commissioner's office is doing? Did they [cracker godown] follow the safety norms.Killing 32 innocent poor people just cannot ignored. Negligence in killing so many people is a purposeful act and resposible persons should be awarded death penalty.

Now that 32 have been killed, some sort of safety measure will be taken. It is only after human sacrifice is made, government or people of India would do something to improve.
