Dinakaran case: Mayawati wants PM to intervene
NDTV Correspondent, Saturday December 19, 2009, Lucknow
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran case.

In her letter, Mayawati has said that Justice Dinakaran should be allowed to present his case as otherwise it will be against principles of natural justice.

The noose is tightening around Justice Dinakaran as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Vice President Hamid Ansari admitted impeachment motion against the Karnataka Chief Justice on Thursday.

The Supreme Court collegium had earlier dropped Dinakaran's name from the list of those being elevated to the Supreme Court. Also, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) advised Justice Dinakaran not to perform judicial work.

Earlier, 75 MPs had submitted motion against Justice Dinakaran in the upper House of Parliament.

It is strange that the media and a small group of people have been allowed to pass verdict on the integrity of a Judge without giving him an opportunity to explain. Judges are not debarred from owning property. It is possible for a judge to own sizable properties if he/she had a successful practice before elevation as judge. A judge encroaching 200 acres appears to be a story fit only for a masala movie. It can not happen in real life, more so in Tamil Nadu, a progressive State with high literacy rate. This kind of encroachment is possible for gundas or politicians in power. It is very difficult to accept this. Still, Dinakaran is villified and commands little support from the intelligentsia. It is really sad.
