Delhi angry: 2010 Games but roads closed now
Agence-Fance Presse, Wednesday October 7, 2009, New Delhi
Residents in New Delhi reacted furiously on Wednesday after authorities announced many major roads would be closed to give inspecting Commonwealth Games officials a smooth ride through the city.

One year ahead of the opening ceremony, Delhi is struggling to convince event organisers that it will be able to host a successful Games in a city notorious for traffic congestion, pollution and infrastructure chaos.

Delegates from the 71 teams have arrived for the general assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and will take an inspection tour of the city's preparations on Thursday.

Police warned all residents not to use most key city centre routes throughout the day, and maps published in newspapers highlighted which roads would be cleared for Games delegates between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm.

The move has not gone down well with Delhi drivers who already face congested roads and long traffic jams made worse by the hectic construction activity ahead of the Games.

"It's a foolish idea," said Sanjaya Gupta, 42, an executive who commutes 10 kilometres (six miles) every day by car to his office.

"It would have been good to give the delegates a taste of our traffic woes so that they realise that New Delhi is clearly unsuited to host this event next year."

Banker Subhas Bose, 39, feared the whole city may be shut down when the Games take place.

"If they can block roads for an inspection, will they ask Delhites to stay indoors for a fortnight during the Games," he asked.

"I will not leave home on Thursday, and maybe I will take leave town when the Games start."

A recent study by the state-run Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) said six million vehicles travelled New Delhi's roads, with 900 added every day.

Hello guys this event is great for us,but i think latelatifee in construction is really bad anybody any officer n minister should be taken seriously by the Govt. who are pocketing money themselve alloted for the event because govt has made very big budget plan for games ,this can earn a very bad name 4 us if we cant host it well n many things should have been done earlier, and metro is very very over croweded ,Its India being most populated country govt should change metro style from europien style to Indian they should have 5-6 metro cars or compartments for one train n people should be told to make lines ,once on the day of subhash jayanti few years back the metro car in which i was standing it was so densly overcrowded that it could not move n then few police man told few ppl who were struck in the gate were told 2 move out because there was no place whatsoever in there since then m worried about how a soft n clean face metro would be able to cop up with the hard transportation requiremtnts of our country. But i think in incoming years new metro routs will be making it easy for them.n new delhi airport underground metro link gurgaon n noida link asia's one of the biggest Delhi airport T3 terminal are really great hope these all get completed before Commonwealth Games 2010.Airport n metro project really look massive.

this is a defunct game. The empire is dead and it is time the commonwealth is relegated to history. Waste of money. Stop feeding the Ego of the Brits by celebrating commonwealth.
