Day 2 of hunger strike for Rajiv's assassin
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday September 22, 2009, New Delhi

Nalini Sriharan is continuing with her hunger strike at the Vellore jail in Tamil Nadu. The woman convicted for assassinating former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi says that after 18 years in prison, she deserves to be free.

Nalini began her hunger strike on Monday; on Tuesday morning, her mother was denied permission to meet her.

Nalini's death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment at Sonia Gandhi's request after Nalini gave birth to a little girl, Meghara, inside jail. Sonia Gandhi pleaded that she didn't want Meghara to be orphaned.

In 2007, Nalini asked the Madras High Court to release her from jail on the grounds of good conduct. An advisory board rejected this proposal. The court ordered the Tamil Nadu government to then set up another advisory board to consider Nalini's petition. This new board is yet to be formed.

Hope for Nalini's early release brightened after Priyanka Gandhi secretly met her last year.  Priyanka, who was a teenager when her father was killed, told NDTV that she had forgiven her father's killer.

Nalini has approached the Madras High Court yet again, with this plea: "I would like to settle down peacefully... I am already 43. Due to my health condition after 18 years in jail, I cannot expect to live long.''

Meanwhile, the Congress has said it is for the Tamil Nadu government and the courts to decide over the matter.  The DMK has also said that it's something for the Centre to decide.

Terrorists going on hunger strike to get themselves released !!! What a scenario !!! Soon we will have all the terrorists in Kashmir and elsewher which the Indian army captured with so much pain going on hunger strikes. This is a much easier and probably a fool proof way of being freed rather than taking hostages.

Definetly the Indian Penal Code rules need to be checked by Supreme Court Lawyers . Punishment in India dont make any sense . There are certain points I like to get to notice , 1 . Regarding this case of Rajiv Gandhi's assassin have everyone forgotten that the suicide bomber did not kill just one person she intended to but many in bargain . Couple of times when this topic came up in the news including heard the lawyer of the accused speaking on her behalf , want to ask the gentleman a question admit the fact the assassin has spend nearly 15 years in jail and she might have been reformed in due course . How does such a person qualify for an early release ? Shouldnt she repent atleast five year's for each dead person who died on that fateful day ? Does she have any remose for all the people who died that day in Sri Perumbudur ? 2. Politicians involved in curruption cases- Moment caught chest pain taken to the hospital and then given bail . Case goes on for next 30 years. 3. High profile family involved - Immediate Bail and case goes on and on . Meanwhile the person either dissapears or stays in India & laughs at the court itself which can be seen on t.v . 4. Anti National Elemants- Given honour by our govt. to enjoy our facilities of tax payers money . Result group of friends from our neighbour come to our country take few Indians as hostages , then you see the same very hardcore criminals who certainly dont deserve to be alive giving a thumps up and getting to freedom . Is this what we fought to have freedom from England ? We still live the life of slaves within a free nation. Finally after 60 years of independance we have got a govt. in power that works seriously for a change . But is anyone listening out there? Is any of the Supreme Court judges really care of grass root Indians life & honour ? Because if these judges were certainly bothered people like Rajiv Gandhi assassin , Parliament case culprit and many more hardcore anti natioanlist especially like Mumbai terrorist still alive wont be alive . We should stop this attitude once for all . How many more Indians have to be sacrificed before we learn that Gandhian philosophy cannot be applied to everyone , sometimes need to show our friends in neighbourhood that we are serious in dealing with anti-national elements whether within our country or those coming to our country from outside.
