Class 12 marks for IIT: Cut-off not changed
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday October 20, 2009, New Delhi

The government has been forced to clarify its stand on just how Class 12 results will affect admission to IIT.

On Monday, Kapil Sibal announced that starting in 2011, Class 12 marks will play a greater role in determining who gets into IIT. Sibal is the Minister for Human Resource Development. He said that students often ignore their Class 12 board exams to focus on entrance exams for IIT, and the new policy hopes to address that.

Sibal says his remarks were misreported by some parts of the media, which said that the new guidelines mean that students will need to score much higher in their boards if they want to get into IIT. Currently, students who clear the IIT entrance exam have to prove they've scored at least 60 per cent in their Boards.

Raising this minimum worries states like Bihar, where students do not have equal access to good schools. Students here perform well in the entrance exam, however, and this guarantees them admission in IIT.

Sibal has clarified that the current policy has not been changed, and there is no cause for concern.  What role Class 12 results will play in IIT admission will be decided by a new committee headed by Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairperson of the Atomic Energy Commission.  The committee is expected to submit its guidelines in January for review.

I think the combined effect of eliminating the Std. X boards and increasing the weightage of Std XII exams for the JEE is going to have an extremely negative impact on the students. Instead of relieving them of the pressure, children will be highly pressurized to do well in their XII th std boards and it being their first board exam is not going to help. Moreover, a 60% cut off is just supposed to act as the eligibility criteria. The entrance exams are supposed to be rigorous enough and effective enough to test the student's capability in the required areas. I also agree that only relevant subjects should be considered for admission to specific courses.

For any selection, the past performance of the student should be gauged and should play a role and support in seclection process. At present the system has become such and the IIT degree has become such prestigious, students focus most of the time in getting in to IIT, neglecting for a moment his basic line of knowledge of study. In the process the students getting selected are the luckiest but the students left out are the worst of the lot. So a system can be developed so that the students stay put the centre of their study and keep gaining knowledge. For this I would say a student can be selected on the basis of agregate total of 25% of X th. 25% of XII and 50% of JEE so that the past and the future is involved.
