Centre's bait for Naxals
Nitin Gokhale, Tuesday August 4, 2009, New Delhi

According to the new policy:

  • Three-year fixed deposit of Rs 3 lakh for those who surrender
  • Rs 2,500 monthly stipend for those who surrender
  • Surrender package to cost Rs 400 cror
  • Centre hopes to attract 10,000 Naxals/Maoists
  • PM wants national package as Naxalism a national problem
  • AP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra have own packages

In an effort to tackle the threat of Naxalism the government is working on a new policy which offers financial assistance to those who surrender.

According to NDTV sources the Union Home Ministry is finalising a financial package for Naxalites who may want to come overground and talk to the government.

The Home Ministry is likely to offer rupees 2,500 per month as a stipend and put in rupees three lakh as a fixed deposit for three years for those who give up arms.

The financial package may cost over rupees 400 crore if 10,000 Maoists and Naxalites take the Centre's bait.

The new scheme is being drawn up after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh suggested that a national policy for rehabilitation of Naxalites was necessary since individual surrender plans by states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and even Maharashtra have not met with much success in the past.

Sources say, the Prime Minister may unveil the policy on August 17 when he meets all the chief ministers here in Delhi.

I think this is nonsense. Naxals are just another name for terrorists for they profess terrorism to achieve their goals. Why reward them . Ask KPS gill to tackle them using something like POTA.

This only shows the inability of the Government to control the Naxalities . By giving such easy money they are aspiring more and more unemployed poor people to become naxal. This only shows the lack of understanding of the ground realities. I don't understand why our government takes such a soft stand on every issue.Had it been china , all the rebels would have been killed by now .
