CBI conducts raids in Chennai; 9 Customs officials held
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday November 24, 2009, Chennai
In one of its biggest raids on the Customs Department in Chennai, the CBI has arrested nine officials and two others from the Chennai Airport.

The officials, including four Superintendents, are from the unaccompanied baggage unit of the Air Cargo Complex. They have been booked for allegedly receiving bribes from  passengers coming from abroad, to clear baggage for less or no import duty.

Acting on a tip off, the CBI conducted a surprise search and seized unaccounted cash of Rs 16 lakh and two kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh. The CBI is investigating whether higher officials of the Customs Department are also involved in this racket.
