Can't rule out future attacks: Australian PM
NDTV Correspondent, Friday November 13, 2009, New Delhi

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who is on a visit to India, on Thursday discussed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the attacks on Indian nationals in his country.

Rudd assured the Prime Minister that his government was committed to stopping the attacks on Indian nationals in his country but authorities could not totally rule out such incidents in future.

Rudd said, "As Australian PM, I am deeply disturbed and disgusted at the violence against any foreign students studying in Australia and who are in our country as our guests. Such attacks will not be tolerated. They will be dealt with full force of Australia's criminal justice system."

"But I can't say to you... since we are dealing with such large numbers... half a million foreign students in Australia at any given time, that you can rule out the possibility of future incidents," he added.

Manmohan had conveyed to his counterpart India's concern over safety and security of Indian students there.

Well! Well! This is what happens when you send trash from India to other countries esp Australia on the pretext to study. The fact of the matter is that more than half of them end up taking away the petty jobs from the locals. Nobody would bother if these so called students who pay thousands of Dollars to unscruplous agents to get them student visa any which way have a genuinine desire to study. How is that negligible attacks take place to students that proceed to the United-States.

It's good that the Australian PM has atleast renounced making tall claims of stopping attacks on Indians when he has totally proved incapable in this regard. Though it would be improper to doubt his intent to stop such attacks (however obvious it might seem), such an admission of incompetence does not suit a head-of-state.
