BJP to introduce cut motions: Will the govt fall?
Rahul Shrivastava, Wednesday March 17, 2010, New Delhi

A day after Parliament took a break, the main Opposition party sent a warning signal, the BJP said it will push through a cut motion against the hike in fuel prices.

"We will bring our own cut motion against the Finance Bill. Many other parties too are doing so," said Sushma Swaraj, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Now, the danger of a cut motion is that if the government loses it then it has to resign on moral grounds.

As the numbers stand in the Lok Sabha currently:
  • If only the Left and the BJP join hands, the government is safe
  • If the BJP, Left and UPA allies like the Samajwadi Party, the RJD and the BSP vote together then the government's majority is unsafe
  • The X-factor is the mercurial Mamata, if she decides to vote against the government on the issue of the fuel hike, the government could lose
That means the government will have to quit on moral grounds, that it doesn't have the support to push through a Money Bill.

But the good news for the government is that if the BJP moves a cut motion, the Left, SP and RJD may not back it, given the BJP's communal tag.

Also no party or alliance is in position to form an alternate government and what could see the government through this time is that most parties don't want elections.
