Tension continues to simmer in Khanakul in West Bengal's Hooghly
district, hours after Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee addressed a
public meeting there.
At the meeting, Mamata Banerjee claimed the CPI-M was importing Maoists
from Nepal and providing them with arms to terrorise the people.
"The CPI (M) and the Maoists are twin brothers. They are resorting to
killings to terrorise people. Both of them are killers, and both have
no place in the land of West Bengal," she told the party rally.
Earlier, police had to lathi charge CPI-M demonstrators who briefly
blocked Mamata Banerjee's convoy at Champadanga, en route Khanakul from
Kolkata. In Kabley, Trinamool supporters trying to reach the venue of
the meeting attacked a CPM office and set it on fire.
There are reports of CPM and Trinamool supporters hurling bombs at each other, after the meeting ended.
Khanakul has been tense for a couple of months now, but the situation
peaked last week when CPM and Trinamool workers clashed repeatedly.
To add to it, a 70-year-old female CPM supporter who was allegedly
injured in a clash in September, died in a Kolkata hospital this
morning.
