The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir is back in the spotlight after the arrest of two suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba militants by security forces in Kupwara. One of them told the media that the terrorists had planned to target Baglihar Dam and some Army camps.
"The tunnel was being made in Sailkote, I was working on it for one month and it was said that its length will be about 2000-2500 feet. Fifteen people were being trained for attack on Baghliar dam to be carried out in 2009," said one of the arrested Lashkar militant Muhammad Safaqat.
These two men surrendered to the Army in Kupwara after they and six others infiltrated from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Army claims that these two men and over a 100 other Lashkar militants got arms training across the border to carry out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. But they changed their mind after arrival.
"They were told that the Kashmiri Muslims were not allowed to practice their religion. However, after meeting with two locals in higher reaches, they realised that they were misguided," said Major General S Mitra, GOC 28 Infantry Division.
The confession made by the two captured Laskhar men indicate that large number of them are being trained in PoK and pushed into Kashmir for creating trouble here.
