Another mishap at DMRC site, 1 killed
Press Trust of India, Wednesday July 22, 2009, New Delhi

Yet another mishap struck the Delhi Metro when a labourer was killed after a girder fell on him at an under-construction metro site in west Delhi early on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place at 5.45 am at Ashoka Park in Punjabi Bagh area when the labourer was hit by a girder which was being lifted.

"The labourer was guarding the beam when it hit his shoulder," DMRC Chief Public Relations Officer Anuj Dayal said, adding that he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Dayal clarified that there was no structural collapse in the incident.

This is the third accident in the last two weeks at metro construction sites in the national capital, which raises questions over safety at such sites.

On July 12, six persons were killed and 15 others injured when a pillar at an under-construction Metro bridge collapsed near Lady Sri Ram College in South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar.

A day after the incident, at least six persons were injured in another accident at the same site during clearance of the debris.

The incident comes on a day when a four-member committe appointed to look into the causes of the July 12 mishap is expected to submit its report.

In light to the recent accidents, I hope Delhi is NEVER allowed to host the Commonwealth Games. Shame on our capital and the "smart" engineers who are in charge of this project.

The lesser said the better it is.This only replicates our planning and enforcement systems and the lethargic attitude of our babu's.
