Krishna swells, Vijayawada goes under
NDTV Correspondent, Monday October 5, 2009, Vijayawada

Flood waters from the Krishna river have cut off Vijaywada town from the Hyderabad side, breaching the Chennai National Highway.

The river is swollen after 10 lakh cusecs of water from the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam were released on Sunday. Vijaywada's Prakasam Barrage has not received this much water in over a decade. The administration is trying to minimise losses.

Evacuation focus is mainly on the Krishna and Guntur districts that lie on the river. People from the low lying areas have been moved to relief camps.

Elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh, rescue and rehabilitation operations are in full swing as water levels start to recede.

I agree with Mr. Gururajan, the supposed water management experts cannot foresee that heavy rains are predicted in the catchment areas and release water before flood waters reach the villages. Unfortunately people didnot understand a CM who looks to take long term actions and pre-emtive actions. People have voted for money, easy life, caste and religion. People have refused to follow hard decisions - laziness is the cause of present problem.

Sir, This has reference to your editorial on the above subject. (Oct 5). The AP CM is reported to have appealed to his Karnataka counterpart to stop releasing water from Alamatti and Narayaanpur dams during the recent rainy days. Consequently Sukeshu, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams which were already full to its capacity, was unable to sustain the inflow of flood waters. Before matters got really out of hand and worse, had the waters from these dams in the state of AP should have been released earliern the damage would have also been less. This clearly shows that the officials apathy towards proper water management. We have a long way to go in disaster management awareness. One part of our country is reeling under floods while the other part is dying for want of water. So steps should be taken to link the nearby rivers of the state to divert the flood waters. Gururajan Ramachandran, Ooty.
