A wife's grief: Colleagues let my husband down
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday November 24, 2009, Mumbai

In a biography that's bound to raise several new questions and possibly embarrass the government on the eve of 26/11, Vinita Kamte, wife of 26/11 martyr Ashok Kamte, says over the past year, queries of widows like her on how their husbands died have been repeatedly stonewalled.

Vinita released a book on her slain husband on Tuesday. Ashok was the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

Vinita has co-authored the book on Ashok with journalist Vinita Deshmukh. The book is titled 'To the Last Bullet'.

She says her husband's post-mortem report was given to her only after she filed an RTI application. Her book, she hopes, will shed light on what really happened that terrible night almost a year ago.

Speaking about the book, she said it was tough to write this since she was in conflict over whether to criticise a force he was part of.

"Men who my husband respected in his life let him down after his death. As wives we deserve answers on the circumstances of their death. Till now we have no answers," says Vinita.

In the book, Kamte writes: "Karkare repeatedly called for reinforcements but they were not sent. Why did a senior officer like Rakesh Maria deny that he called Ashok to Cama despite wireless logs showing this? The thought of our husbands lying bleeding for 40 minutes with no help haunts all our families. Karkare's team managed to injure Kasab. With prior information, which was available to the control room, they would have ambushed the terrorists. And this is what stings my heart."

It's very sad to see these helpless women struggle to know the information which they have right, without these things sorted how can they move on. How can they have a closure to the horrible thing happened to them? Someone must step up and help these people. I am just wondering if the people like Karkare's wife and Kamte's wife are struggling, what about normal people who lost their lives
