A new fast-track for Andhra's politicians
Uma Sudhir, Friday December 18, 2009, Hyderabad

"We will not wait anymore. It will be a stone for a stone and worse.'' The war cry is a dramatic change in pitch for K Chandrasekhar Rao, the man whose 11-day hunger fast is credited with winning a new state of Telangana. The union government's decision to ok the state has backfired dramatically with 146 Andhra MLAs quitting the Assembly to protest against the bifurcation of the state.

In addition to resignations, hunger fasts are also the flavour of the month in the state. L Rajagopal, Congress MP from Vijayawada, is fasting in favour of a United Andhra.  "We will not tolerate Telugu state being split to weaken our bargaining power and strength. We will not agree to that,'' he says.

The government has not indicated whether it's rethinking its Telangana decision. Congress sources say that despite opposition within its own house, and from some of its key allies at the Centre, the party will not reverse its stand. Instead, it will go slow on the implementation.

That could be bad news for former Telugu Desam Minister Kodela Sivaprasad Rao, who says his hunger fast " is not for one or two days. Till the Central government takes back its decision, we will fast.''

Kodela's embrace of Gandhi's form of civil protest  is incongruous with his record. Bombs stored at his Guntur home exploded in 1999.

For Andhra's politicians, the hunger fast and the Gandhian spirit behind it is clearly open for reinterpretation.

We can check one grain to find whether rice is cooked. But if so called united A.P govt cannot stop 4000 farmers and weavers every year in telangana, is it governance ?. How long can telangana people suffer like this?? They need selfrule and selfrespect to address their problems.

People are commenting that the people of Telangana have not voted TRS to power thereby concluding that the Telangana mandate is against it. The first thing that any people be it Telangana/andhra/seema, are concerned is their bread and butter. If the late YSR was giving 30 kg of free rice and free medical insurance (arogyasri scheme) and building houses (indiramma scheme) for the poor, who will vote for a slogan for Telangana when these basic things are being met. They will vote for someone who takes care of the basic necessities. But the wish for Telangana has always remained within them for so many years, since the agreements were not adhered to which were put in place while merging the two states of telangana and andhra in 1956. The endless exploitation in terms of jobs, educational opportunities, lack of large scale irrigation projects have made Telangana into a desert like situation making lakhs of people (from Mehboobnaga) migrate to Mumbai and the gulf (from Warangal & Karimnagar) as labourers and working and living in pathetic conditions. Thousands of farmers have committed suicide due to lack of water, electricity, not able to get subsidised fertilizers/seeds. This is an ongoing struggle (since 1956, when andhra and telangana were forcibly merged) to the endless exploitation of the andhra rulers who ruled for more than 48 years of the 53 years of AP history. And what can be achieved in this 6 years (which in bits and pieces and not continous) of a Telangana CM when his powers are curtailed by 180 members from andhra region.

The home ministry does realise this is virtually an internal war and would do better not to fall into the booby traps of a mobile phone call or a fax.
Shimoga in Karnataka had just been slapped a curfew, shoot at sight orders - all due to the communal flare-up.
