A mother's fight to save her daughters
NDTV Correspondent, Friday November 20, 2009, New Delhi

It's the battle of a mother to save her twin daughters from her husband and his family; a family that never wanted the girls to be born in the first place.

Meetu Khurana is desperate and worries that she may just lose the battle to save her daughters.

"I am a mother of two daughters who I have been trying to save since pregnancy," says Meetu.

Meetu got married to Doctor Kamal Khurana five years back. The trouble she alleges started when she got pregnant with twin girls.

"After sex determination my in-laws started forcing me to abort," she says.

But Meetu refused to give in and managed to give birth and raise her daughters at her parents house. In 2008, she filed a case under the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.

Under the act, a doctor has to take the consent of the mother before conducting an ultrasound which could be used for sex determination.

But Meetu says in her case, that form was not filled.

Meetu's husband has now lodged a case against her to get custody to their daughters.

NDTV tried to contact Kamal Khurana, who refused to take calls. The hospital where the sex determination test was conducted also said no.

"Am scared if my daughters go there, they won't survive," she says.
