26/11: The Taj stands strong for Mumbai
NDTV Correspondent, Thursday November 26, 2009, Mumbai

It was an image that the terrorists had meticulously calculated to grab the world's attention: the Taj's dome on fire smouldering against an unforgiving sky. The hotel's century-old heritage wing destroyed.

But with Mumbai, the Taj has recovered. The charred dome has been restored.  Signature restaurants (Wasabi, Golden Dragon) and the Harbour Bar, splattered with blood during the attacks, are back in business.

Many who work here say the renovation stands for the same defiant spirit with which Sir Jamshedji Tata initially set up the Taj in 1903 in retaliation against policies that forbade non-whites from luxury hotels.

After the attacks, Ratan Tata had promised, ''We can be hurt but not knocked down. The old Taj will stand again for the next 100 years, as it has for the past 100 years.''

The Taj had never closed before 26/11. Not even during World War II, when it was temporarily converted into a hospital.

Last year's attacks saw 31 people killed within its gigantic corridors, 12 of them staff members. Among those killed were General Manager Karambir Kang's wife, Neeti, and his two sons, Uday and Samar. They were trapped in their apartment on the sixth floor of the Heritage Wing... that the terrorists set on fire.

Even confronted with that loss, Kang stood by his guests, working night and day to help commandos rescue them. He is still with the Taj. The rebuilding of the Taj, he says, is his work. "I don't think you know one can ever totally heal from such a tragedy. But I am giving my best and I am taking each day as it comes."

those 60 hours were hard on every Indian...even though we saw it through your eyes the pain was very individual i remmember having nightmares long after.. theres no word to comfort and console people who actually went through that kind of hell..i can just pray that perpetuators are brought to book and justice prevails.

Really speaking india , will never ever be ready to face these situation in any time. As we can see this again recently , since FBI got hold of the prime suspect in USA , they are able to stop the mumbia mascara again..(not repeating it hopefully). and now come the police officers who laid their life for our country. What is problem with our country politicians.. really until their relatives or children die , they don't feel the pain. How much amount will it take to get contract with a USA company to get bullet proof jackets and latest guns and night vision glasses 1 cr or 2 cr or max 10 cr that all rite and i think our bullet proof and guns not used by any police constable in the whole world really it is pitiful situation. government has spend 9 cr for the bodies the terrorist and for kasab it 32 crs problem is our system is not so transparent about reports or money. They waste whole money.. for all stupid reasons.. but not for useful things. Last but the least , when mumbia was under attack every Indian felt that their own house was attacked and not by only one religion or region , Please don't divide the country on the names of these stupid reasons. Only Young blood can change this india noting else. Jai Hind Indian.
