Another attack, Oz Dy PM says 'not racist'
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday June 2, 2009, Melbourne

As the fifth Indian is attacked in a month, the Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard spoke to NDTV on the spate of alleged racial attacks against Indian students in Australia. She said the attacks are not racist and that her government is helping Indian students.

NDTV: What are the specific steps that your government is going to take to catch the attackers and prevent more attackers?

Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard: I have made a statement in the Parliament on Tuesday to ensure that all Indian students are safe and to send the message that international students are welcome here. As a nation we condemn these cowardly attacks. The foreign minister has spoken to the premiere of Victoria about further action to assist Indian students. We want to make sure that we send the message that Indian students are welcome here, safe here and have a good experience here.

NDTV: These attacks have been happening for over a month. Why did it take the government so long to respond?

Julia Gillard: Certainly there has been an immediate response from the police, we are dealing with the situation of safety in public transport.

NDTV: Would you accept that these attacks are racist in nature?

Julia Gillard: The advise from our police is that these are not race attacks but due to safety problems in Victoria but for Indian students this is a serious matter so we are working with the Victorian government to ensure that.

NDTV: What would you say to Indian students who were planning to study in Australia, but aren't keen now after the attacks?

Julia Gillard: I understand that these limited incidents are of great concern to Indian students but Australia is an overwhelmingly safe country and many international students have had a great experience here.

We have been living here for more than 13 years as do many of my fellow Indians. We did not face racism.Discrimination, yes but not racism.Yes,they prefer to work with their own folks just as we do but they will not refuse to work with others when they have to.And merit is recognized in due course with race playing no part. All of us condemn the attacks on Indian students. But they too must take care.Avoid late night work.Strictly follow local laws by NOT working beyond 20 hours per week.Remember your main purpose of coming here is STUDIES,not working.Don't abuse the facility of 20 hours' work per week. What we are seeing are opportunistic crimes. They will go up all over the world with growing unemployment. We used to have a racist party called ONE NATION which is more like BJP & SHIV SENA combined. But this party was dumped by the Australians 8 years back.Resentment against China & India is of course growing with more jobs crossing the borders. But we are not helping anybody, least of all India,by not giving time to local police to control the crime. Also remember it is extremely difficult to catch these criminals when they come out of no where to attack. They attack all residents, regardless of race because they are criminals and will run off once you hand over cash.

It is purely a racist attack on Indian students as they are soft targets belonging to a country of Mahatma Gandhi. In fact Andrew Symonds comment on Harbhajan on an afterthought seems to be reverse as that is how Australians behave. May I request all Indians to unite and give back the same dose to Australians visiting India.
