Delhi angry at footing Games' bill
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday March 23, 2010, New Delhi

The residents of Delhi are a rather disgruntled lot, having just been handed a rather fat bill that they have to pay for the Commonwealth Games.

Annapurna Sarkar's household budget has fallen apart. The household expenditure is up by at least Rs 1,000 per month as the Delhi government has rolled back subsidy on cooking gas and hiked Value Added Tax (VAT) on food items to raise money for the Commonwealth Games.

Annapurna and her friends cook lunch together to conserve LPG. They are bitter that the government is giving priority to the Games at a time they are battling a severe food inflation.

"My husband and mother-in-law are unwell. I am the only earning member. How will I manage? Government workers have got a 8 per cent pay hike, but my salary is still the same," she said.

"Commonwealth Games are fine. But the government has to be considerate towards the middle-class and the poor," said Mitali, a housewife.

The Games have been plaguing citizens of Delhi for the past couple of years because of the construction works which are eating into the road space. Now it is directly pinching them in the pocket.

Delhi Government is building non-sports infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games at a budget of Rs 7,000 crore which includes new roads, better transport system, and airport. In 2006, the fund allocated under this head was Rs 770 crore. Thus, it's nearly a 10-time increase.

"There are lots of roads being constructed, new flyover projects and expenses which we had not anticipated in the beginning," Delhi Finance Minister A k Walia said.

And it still falls short of 2,000 crore rupees to finish up.

For the government it's a matter of prestige, but the Commonwealth Games are coming to Delhi at a great price.

It is understood that some hostels in DU colleges are being vacated for occupation by persons involved with the games. This is highly irregular. Even if the hostel students are given leave, not many of them can afford to go back home and return. Not all local guardians will be in a position to take care of these students for such a long time given the prices today. It is all the more difficult for students whose parents are living outside the country. It may be prestigious to hold the games but the cost being paid is very high. I wish the organizers of the games had put more thought to infrastructure and other requirements like accommodation etc. I sincerely wish that before India ever bids for any games in the future, they have the infrastructure and other requirements in place before rather than after winning the bid.

Its a rude shock to Delhi'tes who are already bearing the brunt of inflation along with the added burden of commonwealth games. Our esteemed chief minister should not forget that hike in wages does not cover all. If one goes through the reports of conditions of labour at CWG sites, may be she will get the right picture. There is large section of people who are self employed and are in middle and lower strata of the society who are not benefitted from the so called hike in wages. Large no. of people who work in private sector, are also out of the ambit of so called hike in salaries. So where is all this talk of giving back to the society by spending more. Mrs Dixit should not forget that her policies are pushing people down the poverty line. With the start of new session, people of Delhi are getting ready for another onslaught of raised school fees . so is the rise in wages/salaries compensating the hike in all essential services and goods ? It is time to introspect and request Mrs. Dixit to not to forget common man.
