The Saffron Gandhi
Wednesday April 8, 2009 , India

It's terrifying and it's tragic. It's terrifying to watch how cynically politicians can reduce religion to nothing more than a vote catching gimmick. How many of us who watched Varun Gandhi rally crowds with his shouts of Jai Sri Ram, actually believe that this was driven by devotion? Why is a religious slogan used at a political rally in the first place? Contrast this with the Varun we first met 5 years ago, when he entered politics at the age of 24, too young to fight an election but already being groomed for the Pilibhit seat.

My colleague Barkha Dutt accompanied him on the campaign trail with his mother, Maneka. At that time when asked on UP BJP leader Vinay Katiyar's hardline speeches, he said and I quote " I'm not a politician...I think my mother has taught me compassion, she has taught me discipline and I hope to put them to test this time".

So, what happened? What changed a young, educated, poet politician into a venom spouting leader who would put Narendra Modi to shame? Political insiders, would say its fear. Fear that in a tough election, appealing to caste or community is the only way to win. Hate speeches in Uttar Pradesh from both Hindu and Muslim leaders are part of the campaign landscape. Development and progress are the tough parts, issues a politician can't rely on to build a votebank.  At the end, it's all about political power and how it can corrupt. Just trace how India's first political family has changed from the time of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Guess than killing of a swamiji or a contesting candidate is neither terrifying nor tragic.

The day the voters stop casting votes on the lines of caste, religion, region and now language, politicians will stop giving 'hate speeches',instead they will be forced to talk about the 'real' issues'.

I feel the reason behind this transition as circumstantial. Politics has turned in to a profession and politicians are no more social workers. They are like me or you, a professional. This profession is bread and butter of these people. Again it is a very tough profession wherein probability of getting successful is rare. Therefore, nobody wants to take chance or miss any opportunity. Success has to be achieved by any means. Varun Gandhi is trying to take advantage of being a different Gandhi. This makes him different from other Gandhis and enhances his probability of getting successful. But one thing I am upset about, why are we highlighting his speech to this extent. This extensive coverage is giving him the desired publicity, which he is looking for. What he has spoken has been told in past by many like-minded politicians. To avoid such happenings in future, I suggest that the media must exercise control and circulate news once or twice. Is it not enough to convey such development to people. What is the link between Saffron and the hate speech of Varun Gandhi? Saffron is associated with India, do not dedicate this color solely to Hindu hardliners. This color is part of our flag, which has another colors like Blue, white and Green.

Well this was bound to happen in a politics without issues.....And why you call it a new thing. It's just following the precedence. See Sonia ji says "There are some people in the country who are more dangerous than even the terrorists". This statement after ruling for 5 years at center.Great Statement? Then why you people are ridiculing Varun's deed. He is also from the same khaandaan (dynasty).

I dont entirely agree with the views expressed by the NDTV official for if its simply for votes, then why bash a politician. Thats his job. That is what he is supposed to do. If he talks of development, he wouldnt get votes. If he talks about religion he will win votes. Well, thats all they care for. Its for you, me and us to decide if , we have to give any footage to such thoughts of an individual. The more you highlight, the more it will fuel discussion on a totally irrelevant issue.

I have seen elections since 1969. At that time there was no money power or muscle power to the large extent. I voted for Indira and later for Janta party and to Rajiv also. I voted for Rajiv with lot of hopes.Telecom improved drastically and some powers to Gram panchayaths. Later Shabano, shilanyas and bofors. He had so much strength to amend the constitution to bring some good amend ments. Even Supreme court said that we must go for uniform civil code.I am normal indian and always feel that whenever truth is told he becomes communal. This country is democrat because of hindu majority. You see how is pak and bangla. You all media people and intellectuals say that speaking for indian culture is hindu communalism. You can see all types of criminals are in politics. All parties are supporting and all media people are supporting them. If any body tries to bring some indian culture in to schools you say it is communal and madrasas can create terrorists. you recognise madrasas as equal to govt. schools. This is our secularism. You allow dargas, mosques, churches and temples every where and when required to remove for public convinience many times hindu temples are removed. Why not these politicians make one common rule that what ever is needed for public welfare will be removed. I have seen some SC families who are employed in good jobs are able to give very good education to their kids. It is good but the reservation facility is utilised by them only and who are in reurl area are like that only. Every politician knows it and they will not say. All these people are thieves only. Excepy Shiela dixit, Modi, Chauhanand Raman sing,Battacharya all other CMs are corrupt and looting the nation. Many of central ministers are corrupt and looting the govt. money. You are not doing any thing to stop that but some hate speech of Varun is an issue. Hundreds of people are doing hate speeches form all religions and we common people are nto botherd. you only hype it make as international news. About roads why no body thaought befor Vajpayee. I thank him for the roads. I thank PV and Manmohan for economical changes. I hate family politics but Indira has taught and every one is following it. This is different type of kingdom. Congress never wanted people(including muslims) to be educated to play vote bank politics. I want this country to be ruled by honest Indian. As of now it looks it will be only Narendra Modi. You may talk about Godra but in this country still worse things happened. We have to see Gujarat and see that Modi will be able to give good governance. Or person like Jayaprakash narayan of Lok satta of AP should rule. Until that time we will be suffering only.

VARUN GANDHI must have his freedom of speech and expression - even if means destruction of hundreds of lives honor and property. That is ok., cuz he is varun GANDHI. This man is a danger to societal peace, and must be behind bars. If his mother is lonely, she can give company to him in Jail. Both are evil characters to India's health. I read somewhere that Varun & Menaka received Rs. 50 crores in cash., to act in this drama !

If we shout a slogan 'Mahatma Gandhi ki jai', do you see it as religious? Ram was born in this land hundreds of years ago. Why is Jai Shri Ram considered religious?

Yes what you all of say is correct .This is one part of the story and with out analysing ,many people have expressed their opinions here and have opposed the religion based politics.Have any body here thought a while on the politicians including the PM who says Musilims are First in every aspect of Indianisation,The congress president,Lalu ,mulayam ,left parties and all non NDA 's directly owing muslims for votes when 80% of the population is HINDUS.These people have left out other minorites. Is it no unfair to Hindus.Go back to the history from pre independence, during partitions upto the recent mumbai blasts and run through care fully to get answers for rise of BJP,VHP,SHIV SENA and other HINDU organisations in the recent times and the silent sufferings of hindus with out any support all these years.

What do the politician hide from? It is his own shadow he is trying to hide from, behind the thick curtain of religion. He uses it to cover himself else he lays naked. He comes out chanting sweet slogans like the TV gingles ringing in our ears day in and day out. These elections are a mockery of our democracy. Thse pocitician mock you, he makes a fool out of you.So cast your vote judiciously and throw the mockery in their face.

I feel very sad as things have turned following the Hate speech controversy. It 's unfortunate that Varun felt that he had to resort to dirty tactics to gain his ground at Pilibhit. what followed was equally worse,he was adamant that tapes were doctored but still prefers to flaunt his new right wing image. No body has any ideology. How can these individuals be able to save the secular fabric of this great nation.

Same controversial comments made by top Congress Leader Mr. D Srinivas but in favour of Muslim Minorities. Neither Media/Leader/person has objected nor he punished like Varun Gandhi. It's shame to the congress leader who can go any extent for seat & also shame to media who is silent on this.

The political parties in India are trying to keep the uneducated lot under their disposal by constantly feeding the communal card for their personal benefit. The big money that can be acquired in politics is forcing the educated lot to contest and gain wealth. This is the sad part of our system. Cast should never be in the rows and columns of any forms in the country by which one can gain advantage/disadvantage.

For years now we've been listening to the foul cries of the UPA blaming BJP to be a party based on religious fanatism. Personally, I am an Agnostic, not too much into religion. But even then, I can sense harsh hypocrisy when it comes to the UPA or the Media in general. I donte understand why such a hue and cry on what Varun Gandhi said, when you (Media and UPA) never take up the issue of a fatwa being declared against Sania Mirza by some ulema. Or for that matter why dont u people have the guts to speak up when the much "revered" Imama Bukhari calls Shabana Azmi a 'naachne gaane waali aurat'??? The UPA is hypocritical in the sense that it claims BJP to patronise Hinduism. Well i strongly feel that the UPA is the culprit which unnecesarily patronises Muslims. India is a country that welcomes all. Then why support one caste/ creed/ religion so vehemently? UPA does that openly just for votes. So Miss Sonia, I think you could be a little fairer while presenting facts to the public. After all, in this country, we all need to stay as one, irrespective of religion.

Politicians can stoop to any level for votes.

In every political party U find the same type of person, why to single out only one? Election commission has laws but no teeth and that suites Political parties.Hardliners and criminals have better images in the eye of political bosses and no party is un-touched.We may talk of any thing in Parliament but nothing on deciplining the MPs/MLAs or Contestants. So many MPs were caught in different cases in 14th Lok Sabha but No punishment Why? This will continue till the electrotes of this country are Illiterate.

Varun Gandhi has entered politics as a vibrant young performer accepting BJP represents the values of nationalism and secularism. His recent daring and derogatory words and his overlooking the collectivism of various religions in the country clearly brings to light the fact that he has neither ideology on his own nor the one based on his party. In the name of disseminating religious beliefs, politicians are spreading hatred among persons who would otherwise have been united across the nation. In India the divide is kindled only by politicians to gain advantage over party's beliefs. Why is that in spite of the presence of so many educated persons in any party, none is sensible enough to spread their own beliefs without respecting other party's beliefs? As a young citizen, I wish to see a little change in the minds of so-called educated politicians.

i think hate speeches made by so called hindu and muslim leaders less communal(because they don't believe in divide and rule, in fact they are staight abount one issue) than so called 'SECULAR PARTIES' who change courses like flooding rivers.

You wouldn't have called" Jai Shri Ram" a religious slogan a few centuries back. So why now? Do you think the future generations of the people who lived in this country a few centuries back have migrated somewhere else or a vast number of people from other countries/ regions have migrated to India in the last three centuries. No. Nothing has changed. It's still the same people whose forefathers lived in the same country and were called Hindus. But alas they are now known by different religious names.

It is only a shame that in this spiritual nation of ours, the "leaders" seem either so base or illiterate so as not to understand "Dharma" and its boundaries. As far as people who are supposedly defending the faith should realise that it seems they are doing more harm than good and tearing at our already slender social fabric
