The Saffron Gandhi
Wednesday April 8, 2009 , India

It's terrifying and it's tragic. It's terrifying to watch how cynically politicians can reduce religion to nothing more than a vote catching gimmick. How many of us who watched Varun Gandhi rally crowds with his shouts of Jai Sri Ram, actually believe that this was driven by devotion? Why is a religious slogan used at a political rally in the first place? Contrast this with the Varun we first met 5 years ago, when he entered politics at the age of 24, too young to fight an election but already being groomed for the Pilibhit seat.

My colleague Barkha Dutt accompanied him on the campaign trail with his mother, Maneka. At that time when asked on UP BJP leader Vinay Katiyar's hardline speeches, he said and I quote " I'm not a politician...I think my mother has taught me compassion, she has taught me discipline and I hope to put them to test this time".

So, what happened? What changed a young, educated, poet politician into a venom spouting leader who would put Narendra Modi to shame? Political insiders, would say its fear. Fear that in a tough election, appealing to caste or community is the only way to win. Hate speeches in Uttar Pradesh from both Hindu and Muslim leaders are part of the campaign landscape. Development and progress are the tough parts, issues a politician can't rely on to build a votebank.  At the end, it's all about political power and how it can corrupt. Just trace how India's first political family has changed from the time of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Politicians give us what we want. Unless we as a society are completely rid of religious and caste bias at ALL levels and in ALL things (and I mean every SINGLE thing), then we DON'T have the RIGHT to expect politicians to stop using.

BJP is making an issue of Karunanidhi's comment that Ram is a myth. Such a comment by an agnostic on a religious belief is very common all over the world. On the other hand, BJP/RSS/VHP promoted a culture of chanting Ram while looting, murdering, raping, hate-speeches, moral policing, rioting etc. That is infinitely more offensive to anyone one who genuinely holds Ram in high regard. There is something wrong in the culture of some people, who do not mind this blatant abomination of chanting the name of Ram in such contexts, but getting worried about an agnostic's stray comment. A case of misplaced attention/focus.

Varun Gandhi's chants of Jai Shri Ram were not driven by devotion. They were driven by a desire of hatred "FOR THE OTHER". Divide society and romp to victory. Dangaa karaao - Satta mein Aao., the RSS strategem. I read somewhere that Menaka and Varun were paid Rs. 50 crores in Cash for their performance in the Drama. This election 2009 was lack-lustre without any issues. Varun Gandhi's hate-speech is the only "exciting news" that came by. People like Modi / Varun / Togadia / Katiyar are literally INCITING The Hindus to go out and kill muslims, rape their women, steal their utensils, and occupy their homes illegally., and to hell with the Law of the Land. Police tumhare saath hai. Jaao... Looto.. Rape karo... Hatya karo... sab chalta hai. That is the message RSS is sending thru its hate campaign which by the way runs 24x7 365 days a year for the past 80 yrs. Eventually the idea is to bring civil war on each and every street of india. RSS wants ethnic cleansing of 200 million indian muslims, followed by 40 million christians, followed by ..... a total recipe for disaster and total destruction is guaranteed. RSS will not rest until India becomes Afghanistan.

It is sad that politicians use religion to get votes. Religion can easily manipulate the thought of people, educated or not. It is such a sensitive area, so close to our hearts, that we are easily drawn in to the web. Not everyone will stop and think about the implications of their words. When speaking to a crowd that is listening to you with a heart that is willing to belive in you and give you a chance, isn't it quite horrible that you manupilat them. I hope there will come a day, when candidates will be elected on the basis of their qualification and vision for our country's future rather than on the basis of their party or religion.

What is wrong in slogan " Jai Sri Ram? Mahatama Gandhi sang bhajan " Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram" in each of his meeting and asked Indians to remove British to establish Ram Rajya in India. Was it communal? If not then Varun chanting "Jai Sri Ram" is not at all communal.

This is perhaps the most deafening moment to see the young & dynamic politicians like Varun, giving heed to the Ideology of the party politics. It would have been a great moment if he had shown his Vision & Desire(if he had any) to take India ahead. He should have shown his grit in making our India as part of developed countries, instead he choose to increase the vote bank politics by seeking sympathy of people on the basis of caste & religion. It sounds very pity. We need young, dynamic people with a Attitude towards development of the nation but the one self. I had a lot of expectations from this young guy, Varun, but to my disappointment, he turned out to be the usual politician. I am afraid that he might have been forced to act upon like this.

The Varun Gandhi episode has been blown out of proportion by the media and political parties including the congress who are responsible for dividing the country on religious, linguistic, regional, caste, class and creed trying to take advantage for getting minority votes. All the politicians irrespective of party big or small wishes to woo the minority for their political gains. This is very unfortunate. If very citizen is treated alike as only 'INDIAN'instead of caste, creed or religion there will be no such incidents. Besides, the electorate also should vote only for the one who can promise and implement developmental programmes and ignore the candidates fielded on other considerations. The need of the hour is a clean, stable and good govt. at the centre w who can stear the country to meet the challenges facing the nation and its people.

When "leaders" like our PM, and other 2-bit politicians like Mulayam Yadav, Naidu, the Communists, et al, day in and day out, show how "secular" the are by associating with one-particular religion, no one sees any harm in that. Why is Varun scaring them then? Bloggers such as this one are only trying to score brownie points.

I think its about acquiring power. You don't necessarily need education, commitment, ideology or contribution for national service. As regards his education; his claimed high sounding foreign postal degrees do not impress me. Additionally in this case there is the benefit of family inheritance of family firm politics which has so deeply rooted now among majority of politicians. And he came on the stage armed not with a sword like that of the moslem invader Babur who supposedly destroyed Rama's birth place but with a political slogan 'Jai Sri Ram'. The BSP leader who carried out the Rath yatra to Ayodhya is not prepared to disown him despite his accepted guilt. He forgets that going by history he is actually a GHANDY and not a Ghandhi. He insulted muslims, fair enough. If anybody calls him Varun Ghandy in public he will surely spit venom at him. As Mayavati commented in sesponse to Maneka's complaint to her,it is Varun's upbringing is also at fault.

India is a free country and people are allowed to say what they like. The media pseudo secularists are missing the point.... when the Hindus are treated as second class citizens in their own country and the Congress are unaccountable on the 1947 partition deaths and 2004 Sikh massacre one wonder if anyone is really educated on this forum.... what is happening in Assam is that OK? We need leaders with strong beliefs not some namby pamby followers of a certain apex group tribals.... Grow up Bharatwadis and remove these communalist parties from getting in. There is only one party that can govern India correctly and that is BJP at the moment. Jai Bharat mata /| namaste /|

Why are you so fearful of criticism? Censorship is the tool of weak & cowards...it is harmful in the long run...God bless

Somebody pray tell me why 'Jai Sri Ram' is a communal slogan? When some prominent film stars or cricketers repeatedly say 'Inshaa Allah' during acceptance speeches, do we hear the media questioning their choice of words? People belonging to all faiths have a right to praise or hail their gods. Secularism does not mean going against one faith while pretending to uphold another. Let us understand that 'Jai Sri Ram' itself does not imply 'Ram Mandir'. Jesus Christ! When will we learn!! (Now try slamming me for using 'Jesus Christ'!)

We have been ruled by so many people for centuries because we are a divided lot ourselves. We always feel as a set of people that we should be 'Righteous People'. Let us rally on our belief behind on our own people. Let us not blame BJP. They are the only party that have a clear standing and believes in protecting Indians. When people have no food, they fight for jobs, shelter and food. Let us focus on economy rather than as to which party supports which religion or caste or sect of the society... as all of them are focussing on some segments to get votes... that is what politics is about. There is only one state which is successful in India that is, Gujratis... No other state has the business mind to make India successful. Let us focus on giving power to BJP who are the only party which can bring prosperity in terms of economy.

Political ralies should be banned from using religious or hate creating words. All candidates should anly talk about what they have to offer but not what other candidate does not offer. Public needs to be awre of these religious thugs that they are really neither religoius or do they care about their constituency. Public be aware to use the vote cautiously and remeber they are choosing leaders for their future

A SAD REALITY OF OUR TIMES..THE STAKES ARE VERY HIGH, SO POLITICIANS OF ALL HUES SPEAK FOR THE SAKE OF SPEAKING AND RAISE REHTORIC, WITHOUT ANY CARE FOR THE CONSEQUENCES.AND IN THE SAME BREATH ONE WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT..ITS ALSO SAD THAT SUCH SPEACHES ARE FOLLOWED UP BY MEDIA TO A VERY UNHEALTHY EXTENT TO CAPTURE THE IMAGINATION OF PUBLIC AT LARGE...NEGATIVELY OFFCOURSE.

"So, what happened? What changed a young, educated, poet politician into a venom spouting leader who would put Narendra Modi to shame?" You raise an important question; however, you choose to take resort to a simplistic and trivial answer. Maybe he was not following any political strategy but simply being vocal on his emotions toward the existing facts about intolerance and threat that the people of a particular religion pose to not just the Indian (Hindu) society but worldwide. I mean, look at your neighbouring country that has become the epicentre of global terrorism. How can one simply rubbish out all that he said without any honest evaluation of the different aspects related to the question. Maybe there is a need to look at the other side of coin as well and to investigate what goes on and within the Muslim community in India, or is the wall impenetrable?

One should refrain from the religious discrimination. As we are living in "SECULAR INDIA" we have friends since childhood from all communities. When we see this kind of hatred being spread by an individual or by a PARTY, it gives an feeling of embarassment among our own friends and we cannot even discuss this. So, before uttering anything of this sort, I request our politicians to go through their own HOLY BOOKS and point out that our religion teaches hatred. I'm sure, no one can give a single quote of "hatred". Life is so short for LOVE that its very difficult to have time for "HATRED". A person does'nt know when he will die. Die with good deeds in your bag and let people remember you with your "good deeds" not "hatred".
