The Saffron Gandhi
Wednesday April 8, 2009 , India

It's terrifying and it's tragic. It's terrifying to watch how cynically politicians can reduce religion to nothing more than a vote catching gimmick. How many of us who watched Varun Gandhi rally crowds with his shouts of Jai Sri Ram, actually believe that this was driven by devotion? Why is a religious slogan used at a political rally in the first place? Contrast this with the Varun we first met 5 years ago, when he entered politics at the age of 24, too young to fight an election but already being groomed for the Pilibhit seat.

My colleague Barkha Dutt accompanied him on the campaign trail with his mother, Maneka. At that time when asked on UP BJP leader Vinay Katiyar's hardline speeches, he said and I quote " I'm not a politician...I think my mother has taught me compassion, she has taught me discipline and I hope to put them to test this time".

So, what happened? What changed a young, educated, poet politician into a venom spouting leader who would put Narendra Modi to shame? Political insiders, would say its fear. Fear that in a tough election, appealing to caste or community is the only way to win. Hate speeches in Uttar Pradesh from both Hindu and Muslim leaders are part of the campaign landscape. Development and progress are the tough parts, issues a politician can't rely on to build a votebank.  At the end, it's all about political power and how it can corrupt. Just trace how India's first political family has changed from the time of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Advani followed politics. He never led it. He forgot to follow his heart. He should have led the politics and followed his heart. He failed himself and those who fail themselves fail the system. He is still confused because he still cannot understand how to follow his heart.

Politics has gone to its worst level.Politicians do and say wahtever they want to collect the vote during the elections. What Varun Gandhi said in Pilibhit was shameful. And what was even worst to notice that the seniormost and the educated politicians of his party were all found endorsing his hate speech.Political parties are now a days running out of constructive agendas to gather votes. In return they are taking shelter of the Dharma.Play with the sentiments of the people and capture the power,is the only motto.Public is also befooled and swayed easily by these Dharma slogans.even today we the people of India take Dharma as an important assest than education, employment and development etc.We can go Kanyakumari to save Ram Setu and Ayodhya to save the Ram temple. But we hardly ask for schools and jobs for our children. For seventeen years, no Ram Mandir was constructed at Ayodhya. And even after the seventeen more more year to come,no temple will be constructed there. The reason is only one ...Politics.People are befooled in the name of Mandir nad Masjid. It is the time to think positively and intelligently to go on the path of development and so-called Dharma.Because Dharma does not give us food, clothes and the roof to hide under during scorching heat and rainy season.dharma today is only medium to get the power and chair.

I dont see the feelings of varun as harmfull in context to the incident taking place by anti-social elements his intentions were not horrible but he just drove in the sentiments i am muslim from gujarat and hatred speeches are not something new to us i born in hindu locality and brought up we never have clashes i support congress but i also respected vajpayee and if BJP needs to revive themselves they need to walk on path shown by Mr. Atal Vajpayee not by the monks

Whenever I watch the portion of the hate speech clip where Mr Varun says," Jo haath hinduo ki taraf badhega usse varun gandhi kaat dega", two things come to my mind. First,he is the son of Ms maneka gandhi who had been so vociferous as far as animal cruelty is concerned. What happened to her son? Do the values were not inculcated properly? or they were not there in the first place. Secondly, very smart move. One hate speech and you will get a plump post of an MP.What more you can ask for? Now the devil is out, thanks to the public of pilibhit, there is urgent need to contain it before it harms the society. I feel pity for this guy about the way he started his career.

The 100 million public of India has rejected communal, caste based politics. Mr.L.K.Advani's dream of becoming the priminister of India can never be fulfilled now. The only place where he can become the P.M is in Pakistan, let him go back to his mother-land where he was born and raised for 22 yrs of his life before migrating to India.

it is great irony of our country that we dont know meaning of appeasement till date and it more ironical for muslims of the country then hindus. Day after day from independence all great leaders of india have done this. why is it that muslims can be fooled so easily. Cant they know what is right and wrong for them. Are they so backwatrd and uneducated that they cant know the meaning of appeasement done by all this politicians. i think they can progress only if they stop the buck there and there and ask these politicians that bhai we know what yuou have done in this 60 years. Now it is time that we will revolt for betterment of our chiuldrens. Try this people you will be happy. Average indian mainly hindus know that you muslim are part of us, we dont want any certificate from anybody but i think this politician dont know this yet/

I think Varun Gandhi is been deprived of nutrition which resulted some slow growth of his brain or some mental problem. I think lots of cow's milk as a nutritional drink which he was been deprived right from his birth is the cause, as his mother Maneka Gandhi qouted (in 1998 as the Minister of Welfare and was appointed as chairwoman of the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals)"There is this belief that milk is a complete food and an important source of protein, iron and calcium. Not only does it have no iron, milk in fact blocks the absorption of iron. The calcium contained in milk actually becomes a health hazard as the undigested portions of it are deposited in the urinary system and become kidney stones. Another condition milk aggravates rather than alleviates is osteoporosis or bone loss." ........ Poor Varun. We can and must understand the situation here and leave that poor kid alone.

Politician should not mix religon in their vote campaigning. They have to highlight what best they can offer,if they come to power..Religon, and sentiments should not be exploited for the Sake of individual benefits.People also tired of seeing their mantras.People shoulduse their mind to select a right canditate,is the question? When that will be implemented.Iam eager to watch thatday. K.Ragavan.

What Varun Gandhi means to me....the rot that is Indian politics. the young man has nothing to show for credentials. he has not served the nation in any capacity, not been in the defense forces, nor a public servant. he hasn't any superlative educational background nor has he been involved in any social service at the grass root level or otherwise. the fact that being an erstwhile politicians son qualifies him to seek election on a major national party's ticket is what irks the common man. the young man does not even have decent public speaking skills. i shudder to think of his abilities as an administrator or a leader of men. the varun gandhi episode highlights the ailing geriatric state of our democracy which needs to be overhauled and fast. every party throwing its hat into the ring needs to have reservation as far as fielding its candidates is concerned. there needs to be reservations for educationists, public servants, IAS and defense officers, social workers and the like. parties need to be censured for nominating candidates arbitrarily, the need to hold in-house elections to select a particular candidate for a constituency. Varun Gandhi needs to loose 20 kgs and get an haircut before he comes on TV next. And he better have something intelligent to talk about too.

Kapil Sibal tells us that the government has ensured "peace and tranquility" in the country because there were no communal tensions. So, all the terrorist attacks that happened across the country over the past 4 years did not disturb "peace and tranquility" as long as they didn't incite communal hatred? So, it's alright that about 500-1000 innocent people of all religions die over a period of 4 years? And because there has been no "communal" tension, there was "peace and tranquility" in the country? Is this the veil behind which the UPA is trying to seek solace? Why has communalism and secularism acquired such a narrow meaning in today's political environment? Does being Secular mean appeasing other religions? Does being Secular mean disliking your own faith and religion? Does being Secular mean overlooking the unruly elements in other religions? Why does a Amar Singh get away when he questions the Batla encounter purely on religious grounds? Is that secular? It is an irony that the leader of the world%u2019s largest democracy refuses to fight elections, and that is not an election issue. We had an inept Home Minister for 4 years, and that is not an election issue. The powers that be, could not find one single person to be the Finance Minister of the country, and that is not an election issue. Multiple terror attacks are not an election issue. Rising food prices despite falling inflation is not an election issue. Infrastructure for health and education is not an election issue. The NDA has been an irresponsible opposition for the past 5 years, and that is not an election issue. Many UPA constituents just abandon the Congress at the time of election. Are we to understand that the partners themselves are not confident about their leader? This is not an election issue! They then announce that they are still part of the UPA. These flip-flops are not election issues.

Don't blame the politicians only, We the people and citizens of India are solely responsible for the division in our society on the basis of caste, creed, religion, class, etc. In India voting is only 60%, to which politicians need to bank only 20% votes to come into power. So obviously they target SC, OBC, other minority, etc to come into power. To which India has reservations for SC, OB, etc and other issues. Common people step put of your home and make every vote count. Suppose 100% voting, than these politicians need 40% voting in favor which is a big number, to which everything will be neutralized and there will be no Reservations, No division among Indians. I hope this make sense, stop blaming politicians and step ahead and vote.

Unfortunately in India, religion, caste and community form the basis for politicians to thrive, divide and rule the people, thereby not able to look into the welfare and development of the country in the true sense. This is eventually taking us to unhealthy debates.Atleast now the people should realise after learning from their mistakes.

Is it a free and fair election? All parties are fighting against each other (i.e. Congress vs. left vs. RJD etc.). People will choose from candiate of Congress pitted against one from Left or RJD. The results are not even out and they are all talking of post poll alliance in name of keeping just one party out. those who were with BJP were coomunal just days ago but now after taking holy dip with Left or Congress they have become Secular. Isnt is unfair that parties fight amongst themselves and than come together just to keep one party out? Isnt it negative and obstructive> Should it be allowed? Why everybody in media is quiet on this issue?

Excuse me, have you visited Pilibhit in recent times, it nothing but a mini Pakistan, courtesy minority appeasing by Pseudo Secular parties. Have they (so called first political family) accepted Menaka (Maneka) and varun into the family openly? Everyone is attacking Varun, because he represents Majority? How seriosuly have you taken Lalu's statements. How serious was EC and Govt when Mrs. Sonia called Narendra Modi "Mauth ka Sudhagar".

No sensible, right thinking person would agree to instigating animosity aginst any community be it religious or a caste or any group, more so for catching votes. Varun was wrong when he tried doing that..If Lalu,or Mulayam does it does not attract the media attention. However, for the entire media it becomes fashion, urbane and liberalism to beat anything native to this great land. Your very title to this article smacks your bias against any thing Hindu.. how else can you justify use of saffron in a derogatory sense. Every political leader when they go to address a muslim gathering they wear the muslim topi and perhaps say a few words from The Quran but you donot find any thing wrong in it. Nor do I. Even today many people greet each other saying 'Jai Sairam' or 'Jai sri krishna' and what makes you find fault with Varun Saying Jai Sriram. There are many who try to malign the core values of this nation under the garb of globalization and secularism. If you feel greater value to hear from West, please try to understand from some of the great people from the west who understood the value of Hinduism to the world. The only Dharma to have survived millennia when many civilizations have disppeared without a trace.

What's the difference between religous leaders, priests & politicians? The ridiculous definition of secularism created by Gandhi & accepted by India is bound to encourage the kind of venom Varun & many others spew.

I think the saffron Gandgi is the original Gandhi, just remeber MG words at this time. Varun is replacing him (MG)...MG always said that he is hindu and he was proud of telling that. But now the politicians making India in to trouble making much facilties for only Minorities by avoiding Majorities. We are fools that to belive these guys, we should not forget that without majorities support minorities cannot leave peacefully. One-way BJP ajenda is right

Little surprised by why many only point out what Varun Gandhi and likes speak of. Look at the manifesto's to the two major parties in India one talks of "reservations for minorities" (wonder when the last valid census was done!) and the other talks of "reservation for provety stricken ppl". Wouldn't this speak loads about who is religion based and who is not ?
