Your Call with Arun Jaitley
Friday August 7, 2009

Arun Jaitley seems to be right at home as he strides into the TV studio for the recording of Your Call. Probably the BJP's most well known media face, he usually does most interviews in his residence, so he can fit in the many requests from TV channels one after the other in prime time slots from 8:30 to 10:00 pm. On Your Call, he's made an exception and agreed to make a rare appearance on our sets.

His answers are razor sharp...this is the first time, he's spoken on the criticism against him, from a  galaxy of BJP leaders ranging from Jaswant Singh to Yashwant Sinha, his legendary cool slips only when I ask him if he's the 'henchman', Arun Shourie referred to in his article in the Indian Express.' We don't use language like this against our party colleagues' is his terse reply. However, he has a fun side as well,  watch out for him as he reacts to a Sushma puppet and a surprise question from dinner buddy and man about town, Suhel Seth.

My favourite part...a picture of him with long sideburns in the 70s. As he says, even BJP people have normal upbringing!

Mr.Jaitley, In 2001, then CM of Gujarat and veteran BJP leader, Keshubhai Patel, was forced to resign for the defeat of Two BJP candidates in two key bye-elections to the state assembly! In 2009 even after the rout of NDA in Lok Sabha polls, neither the PM candidate nor those in charge of elections resigned under the precious plea that "defeat in elections is the collective responsibility and one could not be pinned down for that!"How could you justify it?

All along, the democratic parties round the world, follow the tradition of leaders connected with elections, "resign their party posts owning their "moral responsibility"!How, then, you could palm off the explanation that "the defeat is a collective responsibility and one could NOT be pinned down for that matter?
