The flipside of friendliness
Thursday April 9, 2009 , India

Okay, I spoke too soon. Apparently familiarity also means pushy politicians.

I just met Jitendra Deshprabhu. He is the Viscount of Pernem (some colonial title) and the NCP-Congress' candidate for North Goa.

Mr Deshprabhu perhaps thought that being Goan royalty also means that he lord over us reporters. He wanted to know what stories I had covered in Goa. I told him - Big Mistake. He was so upset that we spoke to a few dissenters, he decided to dismiss our journalistic skills and decisions. Quite amusing really.

The underdog player from Goa is Matanhy Saldanha. Fighting passionately for fishermen against the government. But he too got very upset when we did not accompany him to every site that reflected the government's double standards.

Which is why I love shooting with the public. Some of them emerge as stars on camera, some are shy but honest - but all are real. Look out for a segment I shot with the beach boys of Goa this evening. It will show you why we love the place and its people.
