BJP: Against the tide
Thursday June 4, 2009 , New Delhi, India

There's a story about Varun Gandhi that no one in the BJP will tell you on the record. It goes something like this. A party leader, who shall remain unnamed, rang the controversial young politician to invite him for a party function. "Varun," he said, "could you please come to ..." only to find that he had been cut off midstream by an irate Gandhi at the other end of the phone line. The 28-year old lit into his senior party colleague and reprimanded him for addressing him so casually by his first name. At the very least, he argued, he should have been called 'Varunji' for being the party's next big hope in Uttar Pradesh. The story gets even better. Despite the drubbing in UP (many BJP leaders privately blame Varun Gandhi's hate speech for polarising the Muslim vote in favour of the Congress), I'm told that the poet-turned-politician still fancies himself as the main contender for state president.

While the psychological delusions of Varun Gandhi are the subject of a whole different column, the man himself has come to represent all that is wrong with the BJP today. Simply put, the party suffers from paralysis every time it has to deal with its loony fringe. Usually, it dithers for so long on what stand to take that by the time its condemnation is made public,  it sounds effete and unconvincing. And then, as the media stomps all over it, the party slips into victim mode and tries to aggressively promote its vices as if they were virtues.

Once the preferred choice of India's middle class, the BJP is now in danger of losing the big metros entirely (Delhi and Mumbai were swept by the Congress). Its agenda seems woefully out of sync with its own vote base.  The opposition to the nuclear deal was a prime example. As a party leader confided to me in a private conversation, " no party can afford to go against the sentiments of its core constituency." And yet, by repeating the same mistakes over and over again, the party that had once positioned itself as the robust, rooted and nationalistic political alternative, now looks confused, anachronistic and weak.

Rewind to the Mangalore pub attacks. By the time the BJP decided to condemn them unequivocally, the attackers and the state government were seen to be on the same side. No one was ready to listen to the BJP argument that the Ram Sene was not a partner and had in fact, put up candidates against it in the previous Assembly elections. Ideological obfuscating had made the BJP look like a sympathiser of the attackers, even if it was not.

The Malegaon blasts and the entire 'Hindu Terror' issue proved to be another conundrum for the BJP. A party that had designed itself as absolutist (despite the IC 814 and Kandahar barter) on the matter of what it called 'Islamic terrorism' could not exactly afford doublespeak if allegations of terror links surfaced on the other side of the religious divide. But once again, the party dithered and dallied endlessly. Eventually, it ended up challenging the integrity of the police officer (Hemant Karkare, who died in 26/11) who was leading the investigations.

So much has already been said about how LK Advani and the BJP chose to handle Varun Gandhi's inflammatory campaign. But once again, the confused balancing act -- disowning the speech, but clinging on to the man who made it -- speaks to the essential existential crisis of the party.

Like many others, I believe that Advani is a politician with unimpeachable personal integrity. But more than that, I have always found him a thinking man -- with far too much intellectual curiosity -- to be at ease with petty bigotry. And yet, on so many key issues, Advani's public statements seemed to be at odds with his own comfort zone. It was almost as if the pulls and pushes of politics had forced him into positions he was not entirely at ease with. But it also underlined the lack of clarity in the BJP.

The party's Prime Ministerial candidate was trying to be moderate and extreme at the same time. It didn't work. Just as Vajpayee missed his moment in failing to push for Narenda Modi's removal after 2002, Advani's test as a leader for modern times was how he would handle Varun Gandhi. Both men will have to live with the knowledge that these two decisions have pushed the BJP along a trajectory that may not allow it to navigate contemporary India.

Where Narendra Modi goes from here will probably mark which road the BJP has decided to journey on. The whispers against him within the party have begun. All those rooting for him as perfect Prime Ministerial material have now begun to talk about his 'shrillness', his 'obsessive dislike of the Gandhi family' and his inability to reinvent himself into a politician with national acceptability. Yes, the verdict in Gujarat was largely status- quoits (with a marginal decline in vote share) but there was absolutely no Modi Magic outside the state. Will the BJP force Modi to apologise for the anti-Muslim riots or will it accept that without that, he will remain a powerful regional satrap and no more?

The most honest critique of the party has come from Arun Jaitley -- the man who led the election campaign in 2009. He has written about how New India is looking for 'moderation'. After an election that has proved that identity politics can travel only so far and no further, the question is whether he will be able to prevail upon his party? Will the right find its centre again? If it doesn't, the BJP may lose its way permanently.

Its all about making the right choices at the right time. Well in this case the choice is very limited between the two parties. According to me , BJP has failed on most aspects if not all. We should not look back in the past , but look at the future rather.

I completely agree. If the BJP wants to be in contention for future elections, it needs to tone down its doublespeak and appear more moderate.

If you look at the general elections results you will find that there was no substantial decrease in BJP%u2019s seats but it was a complete loss for smaller parties like Left front, NCP, AIADMK, BSP, RJD who did not have any agenda but to oppose BJP by painting BJP as a communal party. Congress gained at the expense of these smaller parties. It should not be forgotten that BJP is still ruling most of the big states. The present discord is BJP regarding leadership is a sign which shows that Democracy still prevails in the party unlike Congress party. The leadership issue will be resolves soon and the party will be back on its feet. It%u2019s required that the leaders take proactive steps to stop the infighting. The true test is for congress to deliver on the mandate and it seems that it has started failing. Rise in Petrol and Diesel prices has come and it will lead to price increase of essential commodities. The Job market is down and with this the monsoon is poor. Lets see what%u2019s stored for us when the budget in unveiled.

What was the ideology of Advani when he took out two Rath yatras, one for Ram Shila and another for Ram Mandir. In the riots that followed, thousands lost theur lives, or lost their family members or their lively hood. I can not accept that Advani is a real moderate at his haert. It is only political compulsion. Every one involved in communal politics resulting in such devastation of individual lives, including Advani should be tried and cnvicted under law. Now Liberhan Report is submitted. And I would like to see action on part of government irrespective of political horns that will blow, create noise, blame game.Let Indian citizens not feel helplesss again. watch.

Hi, We have talked a lot about Bjp's failure. There other more important issue like public spending for personal benefit, you know I am talking about Mayawati. Are there somebody to focus and make Mayawati pay back to our country as aggressively as BJP's failure??

Burkha... Burkha... My big question is, What is vision of India. If India needs to stress on education then the Govt has to give higher tax rebate for the companies which offers employment for graduated professionals irrespective of Industry sector. This will also improve the standard of the education throughout the country. I might be wayoff the topic here but defintely like to this to be part of your future debate.

A party should have good leader. Advani became a leader because of ayodhya violence. Their future leader modi became a leader because of post godhra violence . As their leaders are like this many in the party are waiting for their turn to make violence and become great leaders like Advani and Modi. In the past non violence created leaders but now violence creates leaders.

WHEN A HINDU TALKS OF HINDUS, HE IS A COMMUNAL, BUT WHEN A MUSLIM TALKS OF MUSLIMS OR A CHRISTIAN TALKS OF CHRISTIANS, THEY ARE SECULAR. IS IT THE REAL SECULARISM. NO NEVER. MINORITY NEVER MEANS THAT ONE HAS ARESON TO FIGHT AGAINST THE MAJORITY. IS IT AS CRIME TO BE IN THE MAJORITY. DEMOCRATIC POLICY SUGGESTS THE MAJORITY RULES. ONE SHOULD SEE THE QUALITY NOT THE QUANTITY.

I wonder whether Indian muslims are embarrassed by the fact that Pakistan and Bangladesh (part of undivided India) are not secular but expect India to be.

In this election congress acquired another powerful vote bank i.e. converted Christian in few states especially Andhrapradesh, where they voted for thier man Y.S.Rajasheker Reddy(Christian) Sonia (Christian). You might say thier pouplation is very less, but in groud realty almost 90% SC's are converted but on records they dont show because they loose eligilibility for reservation.CM's so-in-law is reliogiuos preacher, he directly influenced through churches.

BJP lost its vote share only becoz of its hindutva policies. They still think that Indian are fools , and they can divide and rule . The present generation needs a stable govt like UPA .. And we will always support for Rahul.

Dearest Barkha! SRIRAM & RAMBHAKTS! How nice of you to have brought my posting in 3 parts, though it was a little harsh than my usual, joking ones! I normally don't take things to my head to get heated up all over the body. (Once, my subordinate submitted his 'French' leave letter as he was suffering from severe chest pain 'allover his body'!) But I should admit that I got heated up by your Blog : BJP: Against the tide! Perhaps, it was your intention to get the sensitive response from your users & fans & add pepper & salt to your Blog! In that case, you have certainly won! Moreover, it has helped more of a lot to BJP to find out the 'Very right reason' for their defeat in the recent elections & to peel & show off the original colour of the Yeshwant Sinhas too. There is only one solace, that the BJP had taken 'ONE' right decision atleast to accept his resignation! It is alright that Lord Sriram, Hindu Religion, Hindutva, Bharat/Desh Bhakti are all most important! But I feel that, Straightforwardness, Unity, Friendship/Relationship with good people- (Satsang minus people like Commies), taking right decisions at the right time & at the right place, above them all to CREATE & GIVE RESPECT TO THE PEOPLE'S Opinion! In short, Honesty is always the best policy & it CERTAINLY PAYS in the long run! They may shoot back, 'Without these qualities, how is Congress winning so long & how the people elect them repeatedly?' The Congress never even uttered that they followed the principles of Hindu religion/Sriram. Hence the people forgive them repeatedly. Nobody will bother if a born 'Liar's' lies, but they will take it seriously to their heads if a person whom they belive to be an honest one tells the 'Same lie' & punish him, with a hope that he will realize & change! They expect these super qualities only from 'A RAM BHAKTH'- DISCIPLE OF Lord Sriram- & from the person who admits that he is a Ram Bhath! As for me, I feel strongly that 'THIS REASON fits well for the defeat of the BJP! But, my firm & well experienced personal opinion says, that the BJP will never learn lessons even from its 1001th defeat, as long as there are people like YSs. Not only Advaniji, even that Lord Sriram too can/won't be able run the BJP successfully with such commies like YSs. Had these greedy people not toppled foolishly themselves, first in %u201977 & in %u2018late s secondly with the help of the Charan Sings Jaya's respectively? They don't know to sit on the thrown firmly, ok, they are unable to sit on the opposition party chairs too. That's the worst pity! Sheakespere:- 'Miserables & misfortunes never come in single spies'.But in battalions.

for all the rucks in BJP one should thank Varun Gandhi, who seems to have been planted by Gandhi parivaar to ransack the BJP who got onto the trap rather easily.

Please Take your comment "Hindu Terror" back and you should feel sorry for that. when we never make comments such like "Muslim Terror"on terrorism conducted by the neighboring country and in which some citizens of India are also involved from a particular community. I am asking is it good saying "hindu terror". Please don't involve such terms terrorism doesn't have any religion. Neither muslim nor hindu.

BJP is in a crucial stage. Though they are the opposition party they don't have control over its leaders. There adminsitartion in states are good. But they lost many ruling states because of groupism and they are still trailing behind in these states until today. So they can't make a dream without taking strict action against these factionalists. And they have to think twice before making fanatic speeches as we are living in a Nation where all religions has the right to live.

THE DOWNFALL OF THE BJP STARTED SINCE 2004.HAD BJP LISTENED TO VAJPAYEE AND SACKED NARENDRA MODI THEY WOULD HAVE STAYED IN POWER. THIS TIME IT WAS VARUN'S HATE SPEECH.BJP POSED A DEAFENING EARS TO THE ADVISORY OF THE ELECTION COMMISSION TO DEBAR HIM FROM CONTESTING IN THE ELECTIONS.BUT AGAIN THE BJP POSED A DEAFENING EARS AND CHALLENGED THE POWERS OF THE ELECTION COMMISSION. IN BOTH THE ABOVE INCIDENCE INDIVIDUALS MAY HAVE WON BUT HAVE CAUSED AN IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE PARTY NOW AND IN FUTURE ALSO. INSPITE OF THE BIGGEST TERROR ATTACK ON MUMBAI ON 26/11 CONGRESS COULD STILL MANAGE IN THE STATE AND THE CENTER ONLY BECAUSE THEIR ACTIONS.CONGRESS WENT WITH DECISION OF REMOVAL OF SHIVRAJ PATIL,VILASRAO DESMUKH AT A TIME WHEN THE ELECTIONS WERE VERY NEAR. AS THERE IS A SAYING THAT ACTIONS SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS. TODAY RAJNATHSINGH IS MENTIONING OF FEELING THE ABSENCE OF AB VAJPAYEE IS ONLY SUPERFICIAL WHAT IS THE USE WHEN YOU DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM. IN TIMES TO COME BJP WOULD BECOME A MARGINAL PARTY LIKE OTHER STATE PARTIES TILL CORRECTIVE ACTION IS TAKEN. BJP HAS PLAYED A DIVISIVE POLICY THE PARTY SHOULD JUST TRY TO GATHER ALL PEOPLE OF ALL CASTE RELIGION AND CARRY THEM ALONG TO SEE THE RESULT FOR THEMSELF.

This is hard to still believe that Congress has won so comfortably. National security is so VULNERABLE right now, because of weak foreign policy of the Congress. People who voted for this party will REPENT in a few days..GOD BLESS INDIA

I wish to respond to Nawin who, in one of his posts has said that "If the Congress can be forgiven for the '84 riots, the BJP also deserves to be forgiven for Gujarat". It is nice to see a BJP supporter accepting (albeit indirectly) that Gujarat was a mistake. There are a few significant differences between the Congress & BJP on this matter: 1. In '84 Rajiv Gandhi himself appealed for calm and got the situation under control within 10 days time. The 'emotional outpouring' of the grass root workers was not aided and abetted by the administration. However in Gujarat, the CM actually told the policemen to let the rioting go on. 2. The Congress realised its mistake (of not acting swiftly and decisively in 1984) and has subsequently apologised from several platforms. People in positions of power - including the PM have apologised for '84. Has the BJP gathered the courage & decency to do that? 3. Apart from apologies (that may be considered as hollow), the Congress has done some tangible things after '84. It has worked to normalise the situation in Punjab to an extent that Punjab is now one of the most peaceful states in the country. They have done so by ceding some political space to the Akali Dal & other right-wing parties. The Congress also brought about a semblence of normalcy in Assam which was burning in the mid-'80s. Sonia Gandhi also help cool tempers in Kashmir when she let the PDP form a government despite winning more seats in the 2003-2004 elections. Has the BJP shown any such magnanimity or statesmanship? 4. Last but not the least, despite the passing of 25 years and all that has happened in the interim, a section of people still continue to be angry with the Congress for what happened in 1984. It was a carnage that can never be forgotten. Why is the BJP and its supporters expecting that people must forget 2002 in such a hurry? Considering the scale of the sins committed by the BJP in Gujarat & in Ayodhya, it will take a long long time for people to forgive & forget the BJP. The BJP can help the process by making a small beginning. They can start by apologising for their sins.
