Double standards of the West
Monday June 1, 2009 , New Delhi, India

If ever there was a proof needed about the double standards applied by the Western nations in dealing with Asia and Africa, there is no better example than their reaction to the developments in Sri Lanka over the last fortnight.

Here's a nation that secured a hard-earned military victory over what was unarguably the world's most dreaded and ruthless terrorist group--the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or LTTE. Banned in 26 countries across the globe, the Tamil Tigers, as the LTTE was also known, had a powerful naval arm, a rudimentary air wing and at least 25,000 infantry fighters backed like a conventional army with 155 mm artillery guns, multi-barrel rocket launchers, Universal machine guns and claymore mines among other small arms.

This was the outfit that gave the world the suicide vest and suicide belt that were responsible for the assassination of at least one President and a former Prime Minister across two nations, this was the group that killed and wounded at least 70,000 people over a quarter century; here was a group who's writ ran large over one-third of a sovereign nation. And to top it all, the LTTE had kept over 250,000 innocent, hapless Tamil civilians--women, children, the young and the old--hostage for over two years and mercilessly used them as an insurance against the advancing Sri Lankan army.

If ever there was a ripe case for a well-planned and executed military operation, here it was in Sri Lanka. President Mahinda Rajapakse and his team went about prosecuting what, by all accounts, was a legitimate war. But the world, the Western world went into an overdrive to stop Colombo. Norway, Sweden, UK and to a lesser extent the United States put pressure on Sri Lanka by various means. Some threatened to move a resolution in the UN, others lobbied to prevent a bailout package mooted by the International Monetary Fund for the war-ravaged country. Now, many have called for war crime investigations into the conduct of the Sri Lankan military.

Had it not been for countries like Russia, China and to an extent India, Sri Lanka would have suffered grievously at the hands of the so-called liberal lobby, ably aided and abetted by the 'bleeding-heart' liberals among the western media who think they are the judge, jury and executors when it comes to dealing with Asian and African nations. All of them had tried to stop the war in Sri Lanka, ostensibly to safeguard the civilians but in reality the efforts were directed at rescuing LTTE chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran and his top associates.

The simple and bitter truth is: the Western world has not been able to digest the fact that a small, underdeveloped nation like Sri Lanka has managed to defeat a terrorist group, a feat that they have not managed despite deploying huge resources and manpower across the globe.

For years, the US and the NATO countries have been trying to vanquish the Al Qaeda and the Taliban, without much success. In the past decade, the US and other western militaries, operating in Iraq and Afghanistan to take just two recent examples, have killed and maimed scores of civilians. But except for cursory apologies, none of these nations or the defenders of human rights operating from the safe havens of western capitals have bothered to even acknowledge their gross mistakes.

So why is it that a small nation's victory over terrorism "fit to be tried for war crimes," but a big bully's (like the US) blatant violation of human rights is part of a "necessary war on terrorism?" Why didn't any one of these defenders of human rights put pressure on the LTTE when it was taking hundreds of thousands of civilians along with it as it retreated during the war?

If ever there is a clear case of the western nations' hypocrisy, it is demonstrable here in India's backyard, in Sri Lanka. Let Washington and London and Bonn and Ottawa first look at their own conduct before trying to prosecute a small country for doing what any sovereign nation has a right to do.

(The author, NDTV's Defence Editor, reported the war in Sri Lanka from the conflict zone for the past six months)

We need to appreciate that the West is consistent. Whatever suits them is in the interest of mankind, and what is inconvenient is a gross violation and immediately human rights come into the picture. Irrespective of what the so called terrosists in Iraq may have done, was the US right in dealing with the the way their army did? UK can fight the war in Ireland and justify it by any means, but when Srilanka does it, it objects.Shame on these bullies. I think atleast for this India should become a super power, and show to these bullies what aurhtority with responsibility means

The LTTE was not an organization that germinated out of nowhere to terrorize the public. It was born out of 35 years of ruthless suppression and disenfranchisement of the Tamil population in Sri Lanka. If only the short-sighted Sinhala leaders of the 50s and 60s(Srimavo included) had come good on promises given to Selvah, LTTE would not have happened in the first place. To blindly bash the LTTE alone as a "Ruthless" "Terrorist" and completely let the Sri Lankan Govt and SLA and Rajapaksas off the hook is drinking the koolaid. The Indian Media and the Govt. of India are responsible in a big way for the extreme loss of human life in Sri Lanka. The GOI behaved in a extremely irresponsible way by not once raising their voice in condemning the way the Sri Lankan govt has imprisoned the Aged, infirm and Children in the Manik Camps. What is happening in Sri Lanka is nothing short of Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide. Sinhala settlements are already sprouting in Jaffna and northern provinces - a land of at least 3000 years of Tamil Culture. These are classic actions that lead to the erasure of a culture and a people in the long term. I am ashamed to be called an Indian after India participated in this mass pogrom. Hell, if Manmohan singh can talk to Kevin Rudd about just over 25 students being attacked(and not yet dead), here are 20,000 people that died. Cases where children had to hide in the middle of dead bodies to avoid getting detected by the SLA. And in this case, Manmohan Singh is going to host Rajapakse at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan this week and feed him Tandoori Chicken and Champagne. And we call ourselves a Humanitarian Nation with a father of the nation on our currency notes. Crap!!! This is the worst country in the whole world.

Dear Mr Gokhale We as Sri Lankans are really encouraged by your comments. Any body with an iota of commences sense we see things as you have seen. We Sri Lankans are not war mongers, but we had a job to do and we did it. If some one asks me whether Tamils are treated as second class citizens, my answer would be things have improved from what it was but more needs to be done. Now the primary focus should be the IDPs and their welfare and re-building this country. The GOSL alone cannot accomplish this task, we need assistants from others. Hopefully these western countries will one day will realize the truth.

An excellent article. If srilanka has to be tied in court for war crimes, then US and UK should also be tried for war crimes in Iraq.

I don't agree with your point Nitin. Atlease the west has some interest in supporting the cause of Tamil ethnic group suffering. I see the voice of West is to support the cause for the minority support not to support LTTE. India didn't show the mercy or didn't care about the suffering of people. I am talking about the Tamil ethnic group people not LTTE. Over 20,000 people were mascaraed during the last phase of war against LTTE apart from thousands of people still suffering in that region. In which the Srilankan army has a major lion's share of killings of people. Remember that the rise of LTTE is due to the Singalese Chauvinism against the Tamil ethnic people. In the name of LTTE, the Srilankan army cannot hide the act of genocide and suffering of Tamil People on this region. The action of Srilankan army against thousands of people is not justifiable to defeat just a handful of separatists.

Your logic seems to rely on the fact "you murdered so we can do it too". Do you think thats fair? If by killing approximately 1000 civilians, LTTE can be called terrorists, what will you call the government which killed 20000? If your immediate family was one that was in the receiving end, will you be able to do this arm-chair journalism without empathy? (I wish no ill will against your family) If I can draw loose analogy, if tomorrow India goes all out and kills 1 million civilian muslims in Kasmir to secure t from 'terrorists', will it be acceptable?

This is because whether we like it or not-we are country with prtetensions-without moral moorings as we ourselves elect criminals who kill maim or rape if only they will provide crumbs free. This comes home to roost

Mr Gokhale, In a combat situation it is possible to have collateral damages - let's say about 100 civilians died while killing 1000 terrorists. Unfortunately this is not case here. If more than 20,000 civilans were to be killed to get rid of about 1000 terrorists (in the last stretch),there are two possibilities: (a) The SL army did not have patience and know how to handle the situation (b) they did not care for loss of innocent lives. The SL army just wanted to eliminate LTTE leadership at any cost. If they are willing to admit it, there is no problem. But they should not hoodwink the whole world in believing otherwise

Dear Nitin: Congratulations on covering the war in Sri lanka. A lot of gaps remain in the Sri lankan saga: 1. How many people were killed in the final ambush? Were dreadful chemical weapons used? 2. Why - Sri lanka is still not allowing independent observers and journalists into the cleared war zone? 3...So would you prefer Indian government to act "in this tough and determined way" in Kashmir and North east.If so Wow...How about bombing whole of Kashmir and sending kashmiri citizens to make shift refuge camps in Punjab and Himachal to "liberate them from terrorists"? 4. Prabhakaran is a wanted criminal in India. There is so much confusion if DNA testing was done to ascertain his identity. Did Srilankan government show credible proof to journalists like you in private at least? Did it share that evidence with India officially? Is India convinced by those evidences? 5. Did Indian security analysts had any access to 'corpse' of Prabhakaran..afterall he is wanted in our country. Why was his body cremated in a hasty manner? 6. Why is it that if 100 dies in Gaza it becomes a world headlines but several 1000 deaths (in the name of liberating them from LTTE) goes un noticed or not reported... Atleast personally I feel that it is too early to pat the back of Srilankan government. After all, Srilanka would not have achieved this feat without secret indian support and western governments ban on LTTE and its funding routes. It would be great if you respond or take up for your new story.. thanks

Dear Author, You are not supposed to say LTTE as a terrorist out fit and all the persons in LTTE as terrorists... Even Vaanji nathan and subash chandra bose were termed as Terrorists during british period, but now they are heros. Same case here, let time decide who were terrorist and who are heros.

This article is 100 % true. India flip flopped on this issue because of the ally DMK or else India would have supported this war openly.

It is up to you to analyze and understand the real facts rather than just trying to believe speeches like MASS DESTRUCTION that are just imagination of some dumb . Americans didnt know they were under attack by Osama until it happened. British started shooting innocent people thinking that they are terrorists (they couldnt identify the difference!). Americans bombarded hundreds of villages in Iraq & Afghanistan and even northern Pakistan. What have these Human Rights Groups did? They get away by apologizing and showing crocodile tears. So, as a matter of fact there is no way for them to understand whats happening thousands of miles away from their lands. They are simply misinterpreting and messing around. First clear off what you have started. Clear off Iraq and Afghanistan . When the power is theirs, they are still unable to solve the problems. Sri Lanka doesnt need dumb, swollen headed Yankees and brutal killers of Britain who slain millions of Sri Lankans/Indians in imperial Ceylon/India. WE MUST SAY MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS THIS IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO UNITE ASIA AND MIDDLE EAST. WE MUST SHOW THE STREANGHT TO THE SO CALLED DUMMY SUPER POWERS. NOW SUPER POWERS HAVE NO POWERS. IT IS JUST A BUBBLE. THEY ARE NOW BEGGING INDIA AND CHINA.
