Women Cops Caught Assaulting Mumbai Girl in Video That is Viral

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media

Mumbai: In a video that has gone viral, a young woman in Mumbai is slapped, pushed around and dragged by policewomen over an argument on the road.

The woman is seen trying to protect herself as the constables keep hitting her.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an investigation based on the mobile phone video.

"The clip of women police beating a young woman is doing the rounds. This conduct is highly objectionable. The identity of these police personnel is being established. We have established the identity of the woman as well," said senior police officer Mohan Dahikar, adding that this kind of conduct would not be tolerated in the force.

The incident allegedly took place on the weekend near Lalbaug in Central Mumbai, one of the city's most popular areas during the 10-day Ganesh festival that ended on Sunday. Sources have told NDTV that an argument erupted when the woman tried to get into a lane for "VIP entry", and the police constables started attacking her.

Ram Shinde, Minister of State (Home), said that a senior police officer would inquire into the incident. "A report has to be submitted in 48-hours and if anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken," Mr Shinde said.

Lalbaug is one of the most crowded Ganesh Mandals in the city and minor fights are common as people try to enter the venue.

The video has provoked anger because women in uniform are seen ganging up and attacking a seemingly defenseless girl.
