Woman attempts suicide in police lockup

Mumbai: A 45-year-old woman attempted suicide in police lockup at Malwani police station by hanging herself with a nylon rope on Tuesday. But a woman constable saw her and she was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital and admitted in the ICU.

The police said, Kunda Shinde, a resident of Gaganpada, Madh area, works as housemaid in Malwani. "Following a complaint registered by the house owner, where Shinde works, that she had allegedly stolen a mangalsutra and gold chain, she was detained for interrogation a day ago," said a police officer.

"On Tuesday around 2.45pm, Shinde had lunch and saw that no one was around. She then took the nylon rope used for drying clothes and hanged herself," said additional police commissioner Ramrao Pawar, (North Region).

"The constable cut the rope and called the other police officials. Shinde was unconscious but was rushed to Bhagwati hospital where she is now out of danger," said Pawar.
