Mumbai: Police have arrested six persons, including a woman, for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a man who had cheated them in the past by not returning money taken from them.

The arrests were made on Thursday and the accused were booked on the charges of kidnapping and assault, police said on Friday.

The crime has its genesis in a case of fraud registered against Shahid Bagban (33) in Bangur Nagar Police Station by a few locals, who alleged that he refused to return the money borrowed from them.

Shahid was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by a woman, Shama Abdul Rehman Baksh (51). He was later released on bail, police said.

Shama and her relatives were angry with the release of Shahid. On Monday, she spotted Shahid in a fruit market in Borivali and asked him to return her money. After a brief argument, Shama allegedly kidnapped Shahid with the help of one Imran.

The two then called four more people (who were also allegedly cheated by Shahid) and took him to Goregaon where they locked him in a room, police said.

The accused threatened and assaulted Shahid for failing to return their money. He was then put in a car and dropped at his house in the late hours the same day, but by then a missing person's complaint had been filed by Shahid's family members, they said.

Police launched a probe on the basis of information provided by Shahid, and arrested Shama. During interrogation, she gave details about her other partners in the crime and they were subsequently nabbed.
