Teen killed in car crash month before engagement
Mumbai: Little did Shifa Shaikh, a 16-year-old teen know that her late night outing with friends for juice on Tuesday would be her last. In another road accident at Peddar Road, a group of teenagers were injured, killing one when the car rammed into a road divider in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The deceased Shifa Shaikh (16) was all set for her engagement to her friend Faizan Sardar, next month. Sardar, who was behind the wheel of the silver Honda survived with minor injuries, Mohsin Shaikh was discharged after treatment and Sania Anwar was admitted to the ICU ward at Jaslok Hospital.

According to the Gamdevi police station, where a complaint has been registered, the incident occurred around 1.30 am near Prabhu Kunj at Peddar Road near the Cadbury Junction. The incident occurred while the group was returning home to Mahim after enjoying a drive at Nariman Point.

Witnesses told the police that the impact of the crash was so severe that the car flipped in the air and then crashed into a car parked on the other side of the road. Prima facie, the police have ruled out a case of drunk driving. "Medical reports suggest that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol," said Senior Inspector Sanjay Diwadkar of Gamdevi Police Station. "It is a case of rash and negligent driving as the car was travelling above 100km/hr. We are investigating the case," he added.

Preliminary investigations show that Shifa and Sania were seated in the backseat, while Sardar and Mohsin were seated ahead. The impact of the crash was more severe at the back because of which Shifa suffered injuries to her head and died on the spot.

"All the injured were admitted to Jaslok Hospital around 2 am. While Shifa was declared dead on admission, Sardar and Mohsin were treated for minor injuries. Sania was admitted to the ICU. She is now stable," said medical director Dr S Mohanty, Jaslok Hospital.

When MiD DAY visited Shifa's house at Joel Building at Mahim, Faizan the deceased's to-be- fiance was in a state of shock. Standing at one corner, Faizan continued to curse himself for the entire accident. "Faizan and Shifa were all set to get engaged next month. The car belonged to one of Mohsin's relatives. They used to go to drink juice about twice a week, but this time they were unlucky and were victims of an unfortunate incident," said a friend of Faizan.
