Suspecting affair, constable stabs wife to death in Mumbai

Mumbai: Suspecting his wife of having an extra-marital affair, a constable allegedly stabbed her to death at their residence in police quarters at suburban Andheri, police said on Friday.

The accused, Shatrugna Meshram (40), a constable attached with Mumbai police's local arms wing located at Tardeo area, was subsequently arrested on the charges of murder, police said.

According to police, Meshram stabbed his wife Kavita (25) with a kitchen-knife late on Thursday night, following an altercation with her. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead before admission. The couple married nine years ago and has two children - Vishaka (8) and Sonali (6), police said.

The two often used to have arguments over several issues, one of them being the age difference between the two. On a number of occasions, Kavita had gone to her native place in Nanded district, deciding not to return, police said.

Meshram suspected that Kavita was having an affair with a collegian in Nanded and had altercations with her over the issue several times, police said, adding that due to family issues, Meshram did not report to work for over a month.

"Meshram had gone out for Diwali shopping and when he returned home, he found his wife in a bad mood. After an argument, the accused, in a fit of rage, killed her," said a police official.

The police quoted neighbours saying that Meshram was an alcoholic and used to spend his entire salary on liquor.
