Shiv Sena youth wing seeks Mumbai varsity honour for Sachin, Lata

Mumbai: Yuva Sena, the youth wing of Shiv Sena, has demanded that the University of Mumbai confer an honorary doctorate on two maestros, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and singer Lata Mangeshkar.

"A doctorate for Sachin Tendulkar is on my mind right now. Keeping in mind his immense contribution to Indian cricket, Yuva Sena submitted a proposal to the University to award an honorary doctorate to two illustrious Mumbaikars, Tendulkar and Mangeshkar," Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray said.

"Both are stalwarts in their own right and have made the country proud. I think they thoroughly merit this distinction," he said.

Meanwhile, senate members of the University have also favoured a move to confer honorary Doctor of Letters on Sachin and Lata.

"Their contributions have been phenomenal and as a university we ought to recognise their work," said a senate member.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan recently told the Assembly that Tendulkar should be bestowed with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour.
